The rrFront-end server died. All data was rolled back to this morning's backup and loaded onto the rrBackup server.

Time to order a new server and sorry for the inconvenience.

The RR front end server was due for upgrade.

It's glitched twice in the past week so time to say good bye to it.

That's a bummer that the rollbacks lose so many posts.

I think that only loosing 2-3 hours of posts is quite an achievement. Tells me that Mark stays on top of the system, even on a holiday, plus tells me just how popular the site is.

What about Rolling backups to a RAID'ed server? I am no DB Admin but I would think it's possible.

Bigger bummer that the forum software can't check and recover it's database integrity, as is normal for most databases . . .

A crash should not lose data if the software is decent . . . (at least not this consistently - 2 out of 2 killed it . . . ).

And I doubt RAID would accomplish anything - Mark didn't say the storage failed, he said that the server failed. All RAID gives you in that situation is either a duplicate or a redundant copy of corrupted, unusable data . . .

I appreciate the feedback. There is room for improvement regarding system fail-safes. It has been seven years with just three half day roll backs. The two this month were due to hardware slowly faking out.
