Hey guys, I put my N9 in this morning. I took off, did a quick piro, then went right into a right roll (stationary flip to the right side), about half way through the roll the tail started pirouetting hard to one right. I thought I lost the tail drive, but after inspection everything is fine - no missing teeth, gear mesh is fine, everything is fine. Gyro?

I was able to cut the engine and land it where the only thing I damaged was the skids and the boom and one of the tail blades, very lucky considering.

But I can't figure out what went wrong!??! It has about 15 flights on it. I'm a seasoned heli pilot so I know what to look for but I hate these unknowns.

It wasn't a lockout, I had full collective control.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I hope it's not an intermittent gyro, that would really suck.

did your no missing teeth check include opening up the tail servo and checking very closely for stripped servo gear?

The servo is fine, no missing teeth. I didn't open it up but a stripped servo has a very distinct feel. Plus I turned on the electronics on the bench and went through it, it's fine.

I'm stumped. Maybe a tear down will reveal something but don't know what.

Was it a 611? did you check the sensor tape?

Yes and Yes on the 611. This one sucks. I like it much better when I know what happened.

Check the tail control rod. one of the ends could of pulled out. I had this happen last Saturday. I was able to save it. I did not know what happend in flight, but it felt like i had no tail control. I looked at everything on the bench and there was my problem the metal threaded peice pulled from th ecarbon tube. I have been using this tail control rod for months. The glue just gave up.

Since it piro'd to the right it would seem a gyro fault and not mechanical.

my 2 cents

Is that star washer still in place? I have seen those come off and cause the a similar situation.

Wow, I'm stumped on this one. I just went through everything. The crash tweaked a couple things, but I can't find anything that would have caused what happened. Guess it's time to send my 611 off to Futaba for service.

The potentiometer in the tx could be intermittantly faulty or starting to go faulty. On some Futaba sets including the 9Z you could get a flickering rudder command as well due to broken wires in the rudder potentiometer's wiring loom (which has to move about with the collective stick action ).Not sure how the newer Futaba tx's and JR/Spektrum sets do things re wiring looms but they still use carbon track pots AFAIK.
The sort of problems mentioned above usually happens with well used tx's that have had a lot of hours on them. Not saying this is what happened to you but is possible. If you fly several heli's recently with same tx with then not likely to be a problem with your tx
I have had one pot go faulty on a 9Z and had to repair two 3wire looms on a few different Futaba sets i've had

One way you might be able to check is to have a look in the servo graph screen then move the collective up and down and also move the rudder stick ever so slightly around centre. What you are looking for is any sudden jump in the display for the rudder channel.

Thanks guys, all good ideas and I appreciate the feedback.

I don't think it's TX, I flew another heli all day long after the crash. I have a 12Z.

Mine piro to the right also. The 611 could not find center because the push rod to the tail got longer then jamed. All i am say in is check it.
