Compass Knight 50 > Just a note on setup for any new Knight owners, hard lesson learned

I didn't set my aileron or elivater pitch up properly, I set it up the same as I would most other helis, so that that the control throws didn't touch no matter where the sticks were, But as I have learned the hard way, this is not the proper way to set the
Knight 3-D up. It was loading the blades something weird everytime I rolled it, but instead of checking it out more I just kept flying like a dufus and attributed the load up to a weak old motor that was just a little on the rich side.

I went for an inverted auto at the end of the flight but did my roll out pretty close to the ground, needless to say, the blades almost stopped when I rolled To close to recover, but actually wasn't that bad of a crash, at least I didn't break the blades, I do need a new canopy, but hey, I hated the plastic one anyways!

Well, I Hope this helps someone else out

Sorry to hear about teh crash, but I am a bit confused about what you mean by not setting up the ele and aile pitch properly - are you saying you didnt use a pitch guage to check the throw and had too much pitch?

I have noticed when I pre-flight checked my new Knight I needed to lower the CCPM mixing for ele and ail as the washout slide pins were fowling on the head. I also have a bit of contact occuring on the swash from one of the mixer arms which I will adjust out.

Is this what you are refering to?

Full neg collective the first cyclic bind is the washout arm hinge on the swash, there is more clearance on full positive.
Shorten the links up to the flybar to move the washout assembly up until you have the washout collar near the head block on full positive collective. The washout arms are then not parallel, horizontal at zero collective but that doesn't seem to matter.
Now you can get a decent amount of cyclic at collective extremes.
+/- 12 cllective and 7 degrees of cyclic are achievable without binding they say. I have the 12 degrees of collective but didn't measure the cylic. I use a bocking disc on the tx stick anyway to stop it going in the corners.

Not sure if the problem above was too much cyclic causing his blades to slow or not from the description. Maybe he didn't have enough cyclic and it just never got round. It all seems well in control on the auto to me, but I'm only doing a few turns as yet not aerobatic or inverted autos.

So far my knight isn't going like my 600n but its all down to motor power.

I called Rodney after the crash to get his insight on why it happened. He asked if I "set it up like my Trex600" I said yes.
He explained, a trex needs as much throw as you can get without binding, it doesn't roll "fast". The knight is differant, because of its design, it doesn't need all the throw movement it can get. That would be to much.
So yes, when I set it up, I had some extreme pitch on the aile and elev.

Mine were not touching, no matter where my sticks were I set it up so that it couldn't touch or bind in any position.
Unfortanitly, that can still be too much. This heli can roll MUCH faster then the Trex600 can, oviously, I should have thought more about the roll rate when I did the set up and it acted funny on the simple rolls.

Its true, you Can teach an old dog new tricks
I was impressed with the crash, it fell right on its nose from about 20-30 feet and didn't hurt too much. I am thinking I may get away from this with only about 50 bucks in parts.
