Went night flying on Monday, flew twice with no problems, at the end of the third flight, the tail started kicking around... Not like hunting, more like some teeth on the belt were missing... Heli is a Freya.

Today, put day stuff back on and tried to fly it, kicking back and forth even more... Made sure started up in HH and checked belt tightness at field. Too cold out to play with it at the field, took it home and checked the following:

Missing belt teeth or gear teeth
delay at zero, limit maxed, no binding in linkage
gyro mounted firmly
engine was running fine
moved servo in normal against my finger both ways, no skipping or appearance of giving out early, the pushrod on the Freya is very smooth.

Everything mechanically seems sound... Can't be a set-up issue because it flew fine the previous two flights, and a hundred before that.... This gyro has never been in a crash. Has anyone ever had one simply go bad?? I'm not real excited about sending it to Futaba so they can tell me its broken and we'll make you a great deal on a new one...(futaba's way of fixing things)

I was getting ready to put a 601 in this heli, but don't want to be forced to do it! I have a spare 401/9253 that I would prefer to sell than have to break open and use... The 401 is great, until you use a 601

Any other things I'm missing here guys?

Thanks, Mike

Check the wires. I had a 9253 servo start acting up similarly to yours. I wiggled the wires at the base of the servo and found that the servo would start jumping all over the place. Not good. What I could tall the servo solder joints came loose.

Also I have sent a GY 401 to hobby services and they have replaced it free of charge. Servo was also replaced

Having a fleet of 3 helicopters I am going to start saving to get an extra gyro and associated stuff to help trouble shoot. Nice having extra ...just in case.

You hit the nail on the head Ken...

I happened to have a spare gy401, so I put it on, didn't change anything...

My buddy wiggled the wire right at the servo and it was shorting... How to prevent this?? I have no idea, the servo wire was passively routed back to the gyro, nothing that would pull on it... Put a new 9253 in and it was back to normal. Not sure how old this servo was, definitely less that 8 months, I went through a rash of crashes last summer that "updated" most of my electronics.

I'm lucky I didn't lose a helicopter over this!

Check your clutch

You may want to check your clutch maybe one of the clutch shoes broke. I know tail kicking can be attributed to clutch shoes breaking. Just a thought

GY401

We were just starting the test flight on my new Quick30 Learner. It was about 10" off the ground and the tail just went and did a 180 before we could get it on the ground. The Gy401 had died, it would not work at all. The unit was new and this was the first flight. The store where I bought mu heli replaced it N/C. I will not get to test it again till the first saturday in March. I will let you know how it goes.

This is kinda freaky. I posted a couple of days ago with the identical problem, except when I knocked mine out of HH the twitch went away and when I landed the gyro was flashing the double blink to indicate trouble. Thought it was just me starting it up in HH, but it turned out it did the same thing on the next flight too. Made me kind of mad, I had to go back to work! I checked everything, including the wires and have yet to find a problem. I'm baffled. I hope I find something soon, so that I don't have to worry while I'm flying.

Speaking of spares;

Here's mine;

Basically, all that's missing is a kit (and then some).

When you live as far as I do, it makes sense.

When I was really addicted, I had all the best stuff in the Freya. Now, I scaled it back down to a managable cost and keep all the top of the line stuff in the drawer in the thinking I will appreciate them better much later when I can tell the difference between mainstream and competition level equipment.

I too have a faulty 401 that "freezes up" midflight. I think it maybe the wires as well, but I don't have a beater 30 that I am willing to test it.

Mike--

I had a 9253 go bad in Vegas, it was like someone had opened the case and dumped CyA on the gears, no good! WCM had a 9253 at a good price and I was able to replace it. Jason K. had told me last year in Vegas to keep an eye in that servo as it apperently has a rather short life. I flew the GY401/9253 combo in all my birds for about a year and a half before I had this servo go bad in my Freya.

401/9253

Well...what about this?
Got my pushrod silky smooth...smoother than I have ever had it
Have to crank the gain up to 100% to handle Fast backwards flight (WOT) Even then with a little wind and doing a hard backwards turn, it'll let go some. I'm running ST2, Fury, 100mm nhp tails, 700mm MA Graphite blades.
Now, in FFF(WOT) in certain attitudes and a little cross wind, the tail will kick just a little about 2-4 times as as I turn into the wind.

I'm thinkin...must be the gain set too high.
Must get longer boom and longer tail blades or 680 mains.

What do you think??

Whoa, a mate said his gyro died & later told me it was the S9253 that died. He replaced it with a S9252, I told him to get another S9253 as it's faster.

I have a new GY401/S9253 set for my Sceadu...

If it's an issue, I hope Futaba fixes it.
