e-Quick Of Japan EP-8/10/16/18 > QJ EX

Hello guys
Been away from the whole QJ thing for some time now.
BUT that may change very shortly lol.
See, I do miss my QJ quite a bit, even though its not the latest thing.
It flew very nicely, and everything fit very well.
Only thing I had misgivings about was the slop in the swash, and still do actually lol.
If I do buy this particular EX thats for sale in Oz, then I will be looking to adapt either a HDX500SE or Trex500 swash.
Maybe a stretch kit (undecided but always wanted that) and maybe Scorpion powered on 6s.
Just thought Id check in here, say hi, and get the QJ creative juices flowing lol.
By the way, I cant remember, but can the EX handle 3k headspeed with 3d?

Cheers

If you bling it, they will come :D

Hi gorn , welcome back!!!
If you can get that EP8 EX that you showed me , GET IT !
If my memeory serves me , you were flying the EP8 Sportsman variation ? I honestly think that Quick of Japan should discontinue the EP8 Sportsman version and offer the Expert in silver or blue.
As for the swashplate , the EX has the 2 bearing swash(Sportsman had only one) and it is very tight with NO slop.
Quote
but can the EX handle 3k headspeed with 3d?
Yes , it can ... With the 8mm main shaft it can handle any headspeed you want to throw at it...But , I have found that the perfect headspeed is around 2650-2800 RPM`s .
The EX has 2 radial bearings and 1 thrust bearing in the main grips, And they stole your original idea of putting 2 radial bearings in the tailblade grips to get rid of the tailgrip slop.
I remember that you were the first person to come up with that idea of putting 2 bearings in the tail grips to get rid of the slop...
As for the best motors to use , the Scorpion or the Medusa motors are the best that I have found. The Z-power motors are good but they are too ,big 43mm diameter, and you run into the front servo problem.
I am running the Scorpion HK3026-1210kv on my EX and I am going to use my Medusa 36-50-1000kv motor on my EP9 that I am building.
I just ordered an HK3026-1000kv Scorpion motor to try on my EP9 , it should be here tomorrow.
Any questions gorn , and don`t hesitate to ask...

I hate waiting for stuff to arrive lol
I have some RJX 425mm carbon blades sitting here, still have my old 10xl motor, have a Turnigy Plush 60a esc on its way, ar6000 rx, Logitech 2100 gyro.
Going to run 6s 2500 Outrage packs.
Going to buy a 9257 for the tail as funds allow.
What pinion would I need to get a HS of around 2800?
I know there are better motors out there now, but money is tight for now, so I'll use what I have.
Cheers

My old SP?
She did a cartwheel across the lawn in idle 2.
Was on the ground, mid stick, huge gust of wind flipped it over, I was looking at something else so didnt correct it
I gave my 2 SP's to a friend to either fix and fly or fix and sell.
Nothings happened for ages, so Im thinking I will get the lemon back and fix her up as a sunday flyer. Keep the EX for more spirited flight.
Dont you worry though, there are more Lemon canopies on the way lol

If you bling it, they will come :D

Ive found that the Sp flies quite well on 6s with a hs of 2450, stock length flyar, paddles and ATVs on the swash set at 140% all the way accross the board. I havent got my EX back in the air as I had to replace the servos due to one bad servo and Futaba discontinuing the model I was using. Id like to do the same with the EX, lower headspeed and try a higher cell count with longer blades. Although the announcement of this new EP5 has me distracted. Im thinking of picking one up and running it on 1300mah 6s and 350s....

Im quite hoping that those Laser cut wooden scale kits for the Apache and Cobra go back into production as a home for my SP.
Approach Engineering was the manufacturer, but that poor fellow has passed away.
Cant remember the company (its in the scale section)but they have said that their are plans to bring the Cobra out, unsure on the Apache.
I was offered a pre production Apache kit to do a build log and review of when they first appeared, but declined due to no time and money to do the kit justice.
Kicking myself now

They may be an old design now days, but I still think their sweet.
Quality is very good, bit weighty, but nothing a Scorpion os 6s wont fix

Hi Jimbo
Waiting for my Turnigy Plush 60 esc to arrive, and need some Dubro servo arms to finish.
Its a public holiday here today, so no progress to speek of lol.
Going to cut a slot in the base of the main rotor hub so it doesnt rock on the main shaft anymore.
Did that with my SP as well, instant fix.
The 425mm carbons I have here look like they will chop my tail blades off once smacked around a bit lol, so I may have to extend the boom.
I will be getting the dampner stiffening kit, and the upgrade mixing and washout levers.
Im hoping for -12 +12 pitch and will be shooting for 8 deg cyclic, whichever way I can get it.
Doesnt worry me if I have to use another brand mixing levers to get that.
First flights will be only about 2400rpm, as thats the only pinion I have right now.
So for the time being she will be my sunday cruiser.
Looking for a new job closer to home right now, so once thats done, Scorpion, MS 420mm, Outrage 6s 2500, and 2800+ rpm.
Long term, I may have a go at making my own chassis, mostly to lose some pork, and to lower the CG of the whole heli.
Just ideas floating around right now, may not happen, but Im thinking I'll have a try and see what happens

If you bling it, they will come :D

What pinion do you need , I may have one I can send you ?
As for the main blades , The MScomposite 420mm are one of the WORST blades that I have tried out on the EP8, the stock woodies are way better for anything under 2600RPM`s... The best blades that I have used are the MAH 425mm , they fit the stock boom without any mods.

Gorn,
I suggest you pick up a set of the big pitch levers from quick, or you can mod the stock ones if you can fabricate some spacers.

Cool, thanks.
Ive emailed the Aussie supplier regarding parts support, we'll see if I get a reply.
Other Aussies are getting ready to jump ship and buy Trex 500 and Protos 500, as parts support here is non existant at the moment, and no'one knows why.
Hmmmm

I can get 15+ and 15- , I did the mod to the upper mixing arms using the spacers that go on the flybar between the control arms and the see-saw.... The spacers that came with my EP9 kit are a little longer , maybee 2mm longer..
Harold at www.helicopterhobbies.com has the EP9 in stock and he has the parts for the upper mixing arm mod. Give him a call at
1-704-624-6473... He can fix you up ...
