e-Quick Of Japan EP-8/10/16/18 > andrews power pole connectors

Hi,

I had the helicopter out yesterday, one of the powerpoles didn't make a good connection on one side when pluged in. The heli lost power, the battery pack swelled a little. & the plastic on the powerpole melted a little.
All the guys at the funfly in fremont, ca told me to get rid of those things & use the dean's.
Does anyone else have an opinion or preference between the two connectors?

Dan

Never have used the Powerpoles, and have never had a problem with a Deans. With that said, I only use Deans.

I agree fully... When you plug the Deans connecters in they are hard to come apart , even when you want to take them apart it is hard to do...

Totally disagree. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest the source of your problems lie elsewhere.

Nothing beats an Anderson Power Pole in performance, usability, and reliability. Don't take it personal guys, but to state anything else in regards to PPs and Deans means you're uninformed or so wrapped up into Deans you can't see beyond your nose.

Don't know if it's a European thing, but we guys here all use these 4mm Gold Plugs which are "miss-plug-secured" and very reliable.

Never seen the PowerPole system here, but it looks interesting.

Cheers,

FunKey

oooOOo... good callout FunKey... I've updated my post to keep it realistic. Bullet connectors and Zeroloss plugs are pretty hard to beat.

I'm a Powerpole fan. The only problems I've ever see seen with Powerpoles occurs when they are assembled incorrectly.

Powerpoles are industrial grade connectors complete with specifications from the manufacturer.

Deans are hobby grade connects and have no official specifications from the manufacturer.

I've been Powerpoles for many years and I've never had a problem.

Additionally, Powerpoles can be crimped which provides a superior connection compared to soldering.

I had a similar problem when I got into this hobby, Ive come to rely on only completely soldered connectors with gold plating. I dont use Deans I use the Japanese equivalent which are basically the same thing but the insulators are black. Could be that your powerpoles were the wrong ga. for the your amp draw?

doubtful twinring... the 15A PPs are actually load tested well beyond that... like into the 60-80A range at our typical (11.1 - 22.2) voltages.

I'm leaning towards a short somewhere along the way or something simple like plugging black into red.

One of the benefits of PPs is the fact that they're friction spring loaded... The thing the OP complained about (what some call not fitting properly) is actually considered a benefit.

Also, I've yet to find a connector that would cause a battery to swell. There's something else at work here, no doubt the more I consider the scenario.

I guess I should clarify. The power pole contact wasn't snapped properly all the was into the plastic. Hence I had a bad connection with higher resistance. I believe my power poles are the 30A variety.
The first battery I ran was fine, No problem until I plugged in the one misasembled by me.

The reason I'm looking for opinions on the connectors, or problems. Is because all the guys that looked at it at the fun fly to me to throw those things in the garbage. I don't think anyone in my area uses them but me.

When I get a chance to run a couple more batteries through the heli, I'll be able to decide if the problem lies elsewhere.

Thanks for all the opinions & please keep them coming.

Some folks wouldn't recognize a superior connector if it hit them in the head.

That is why I use the Deans , cause you know when they are connected...

Yeah, you gotta love when the spring on the Deans comes apart and shorts your pack ruining your expensive LiPo.

deans battery side doesnt have a spring ?? pwr poles are rated to 55amps deans are rated to 80amps. both use gold conductors. I dont like the pwr poles due to the exterior plastic housing, i dont think it will hold up to the heat IMHO I use deans on mine and when soldered correctly they are smooth. ive also had some that were tough but better tight then loose i always say

actually I do think that with the deans style connector improper soldering makes them distort which makes the fit tighter. Ive had this situation before.

There are Deans, and then there are 'Deans Compatible' I have some of the compatible ones and noticed the springs were not as good and the fit was much looser/easier to separate. Additionally the springs on the clone were very easy to bend out of shape, the springs on the real deans are MUCH more resistant to deformation and bending. I think bad experiences some have with Deans are these look-alike/knock offs that are out there, the spring seeming to be the major difference between them.

Real Deans
----------
Spring Thickness: 0.012(0.31mm)
Spring Width: 0.123"(3.12mm)
Male Prong Thickness 0.05"(1.27mm)
Male Prong Width 0.162"(4.12mm)

Look Alike Deans
----------
Spring Thickness: 0.008"(0.21mm)
Spring Width: 0.122"(3.11mm)
Male Prong Thickness: 0.047"(1.18mm)
Male Prong Width: 0.161"(4.11mm)

You can get power poles over 100A, A friend of mine just used them setting up a ups system for a chevron office building.

Of course you would never be running that gage wire in you're heli.

Rather than throw your PPs away, drop them into an envelope and mail them to me. PM me if you're seriously dumping your supply of them.
