Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Gear mesh feeling tight on Raven.

Hi everyone, i noticed after flying yesterday that the mesh between my engine clutch bell and counter gear with the one way seems tighter than before. I don't know, maybe i am going nuts. There apears to be slight wear on the counter gear to. You really can't change the gear mesh, any thaughts?

Thanks....

There is a little adjustment for the gear mesh. Most of the time, the reason for the gear mesh error is that the engine is SLIGHTLY off-centered. There is about 5 degrees of adjustment available for the engine geometry. I usually install the engine loosely, check the gear mesh, and then check the start shaft alignment. Once all three of these are correct, I tighten up the engine mounting bolts and recheck everything (Tightening the bolts CAN change the adjustments).

Okay, so i couldn't seem to find the gear mesh problem. The gears still seemed tight but i still decided to fly today. Well, it is not the gear mesh it is the clutch. Somehow it is slightly engaged. The engine wouldn't idle (to much load) and to take off i had to bring the heli out under 1/4 throttle. When i let go the blade roared up to speed. So, why wouldn't the clutch be disengaging. I wonder if something got in there (rock?) when the clutch had expanded during flying. I do fly low somtimes and am in the desert so i guese it is possible.

When the engine is not running, the clutch bell should turn freely. If not, you need to sand the clutch liner until this is achieved. If the clutch itself is sprung at all, it should be replaced.

The reason for a sprung clutch is letting the liner wear excessively before replacement. The liner should be replaced when half of it's thickness is worn away.

While you have it apart, check for ANY slop, side to side or up / down in the countershaft...

Well, i just got finished tearing her down. At first i couldn't find it but a quick swipe with a paper towl revealed it. There is a fracture and after applying just a bit a force it split in two. I am wondering if the clutch that tower sells for the kinetic is the same thing because i am going to be ordering some stuff from them anyway and would like to order from just one source

PICS!!

So you guys can see from the pics. I took almost NO force for the two parts to break once out of the heli. What a pain in the but. No other part of the drive train apeared to be damaged. I ordered the part and should be back in bisnuss by next week

Usually, on any heli, this is caused by the clutch liner being worn (have you had any "hot starts"?)

If so, the new clutch will not last too long either. So I would suiggest you replace the inexpensive clutch liner and/or bell at the same time.

The Century clutch liners are paper based, and do not give exceptionally long lifetimes. I use JR clutch liners, and rarely have to service the clutch system (the JR clutch liners wear like iron!).

Cambo,

The cluct on Tower Hobbies for the Kinetic 50 is the same as the Hawk Pro and Raven 50. Last time I ordered a new Clutch and Drive Gear and Bearing, I got the ones for the Kinetic 50, same parts and a few bucks cheaper too...

the kinetic 50 is the same thing the raven 50, it just doesnt use the e-ccpm setup, it uses the m-ccpm setup like the hawk pro, so basically every part on that thing works with the hawks and ravens, which is nice considering century is sometimes out of parts that are highly needed from a crash or something, lol...

and make sure to check your clutch and liner about every gallon of flight. sure it might be painful to drop the engine so often, but in the long run, its worth it...

Just got back from the field. Put 3 tanks through the new clutch. I really think there was something wrong with the old clutch from the start. Even after 3 gallons it would always slightly be engaged and the blades would slowly turn. Now, at idle the blades don't move but just a few clicks above it the clutch engages and the blades spool up. The first two flights were light to make sure nothing was wrong but the third flight I really banged it around. What a blast! I was coming down to land when i noticed the engine start to rev up and down. My first reaction was the clutch was blown. But strangley the heli still had lift. I landed and walked over. DAHH, i ran out of gas, only half of the header left and no fuel in the line. Note to self, never do continues roles and flips with 1/2 header of gas left

Oh, for the first time i got disoriented. I thaught i was inverted when i was upright. Jammed the negative to get out, or so i thaught, and OMG that thing came tord the earth like a bat out of hell. Holly cow, first time i have ever done that. What a scare. Will try to avoid doing that again
