Blade woof w/ Kasama Head

Hey Barracuda,

I just recently have gotten blade woof issues even with a Kasama head. I can't believe it. I went through this with my old TT head and 9202 collective servo. Now I'm using 6965's and a Kasama head. I'm lost at this point. the last flight (fright)I flew, the output shaft on the servo sheared off!!! If it still woofs after new spindle, main shaft and servo gears I'm not sure what else to do. Please help. This is a well maintained R50 that has a nice tight control system.

Have fun...... be safe...... burn fuel....... priceless!

Have someone else that is experienced go over it with a fine tooth comb to see if he can spot any problems......there most likely HAS to be something loose......or bent..... Have you checked the balls on your entire control system ?? What I mean are the screws that hold the balls in place. A bent screw, not detectible by just looking at it, can cause you grief......

I'm not saying you're not experienced but sometimes having someone else thoroughly check everything might help....... That's how we do it among friends locally.......

What one misses, the other might see it.....

There were about 4 of us at the field on Sunday looking it over. I fly with Paul Tradelius, the writer for MAN. Even he was scratching his head over this. There is a guy in the club that was there that has a nice HD vid cam. He wants to get blade woof on video. That would be cool, might be able to learn something from it, who knows. But yeah, I agree, several sets of eyes are better than just mine.

My penny's worth, blade woof occurs due to a variation in pitch between the two blades. I would seek the problem between the swashplate and the blade grips as any problem further down will influence both sides not one side only.
If you have fitted a new spindle shaft take time to re-lube your dampers and thrust bearings, also try tightening or loosening your blades.
Also keep in mind blade woof can bent the spindle so replace it or take it out for the glass test

It would be a good idea! My Rappy 30 doesn't so much woof as just buzz occasionally - what I mean is that she'll be hovering fine and making the buzz noise, then, after a slight change in control input (any!) she will lose the buzz and sit there with a nice, smooth high pitch, constant waaaaaah out of the tuned pipe (NOTE not wah-wahs which is different altogether!) as it should be. Perhaps it's resonance in the frames (RaptorTechnique mentions this phenomenon), but hey - the blades stay in track and she's a Raptor so she flies anyway

I have just tinkered with the throttle curve tonight - a few more rpm may take the flight regime away from the buzz.

Tach, what blades?

Redwings, if Paul couldn't fix it I'm not sure what I can add.
Edit: did you locktite the radial bearings into the grips? If not they can vibrate and wallow out the grip causing slop between the grip and the bearing. Might be worth checking.

Stolla, you would think that but its not true, lots of things starting at the servo output shaft can cause blade woof.

BH you obviously have a lot of experience with this and I do agree with you that a problem between servo output shaft and swash can eventually lead to the problem, i.e. for instance slop between servo and swash can lead to inconsistent pitch in BOTH blades, however it should not create woof, at least not until something between swash and blade goes wrong on one of the sides.
However continuous slop or another problem between servo and swash may create the problem of woof due to the inconsistency of the input i.e. damperwear, thrust- bearing etc.
Therefore I believe the fix will have to be to fine comb everything from servo upwards as you and others mentioned.
But I stand by my observation that the woof can only occur when something goes wrong between swash and blade.
This imo is why you find the problem goes away when you replace dampers spindle etc but in a couple of cases returned most probably because of an underlying problem stemming from servo onwards as you mentioned.
It will be important therefore if you had a woof experience to take a good look at your dampers, thrust bearings and spindle even if you find slop between servo and swash, as although it may be the ultimate cause of woof the chain of events stemming from that would have caused inconsistency between the two sides between swash and blade grip.

JP carbon blades - nice finish, not too pricey (£30).
