I have a Sceadu Evo 50 with a Futaba 401 gyro and 9254 servo. I'm running Radix 600 main blades with 95mm NHP carbon tails.

Currently I am running at 42% gain as this is as high as I can go before it begins to hunt. The servo horn is set at 14mm. I'm getting good solid hold in the hover (accurate stopping from stationary pirrouette etc) and in forward flight. However, when I try to fly backwards I am losing the tail - it keeps blowing out to the side. As far as I can see, everything mechanical is working well.

Is the 401 capable of maintaining the tail during fast backwards flight on a 50 size bird? Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Or are my settings wrong somewhere?

Any help would be much appreciated.

You've got something wrong, mine would plummet straight at the ground in a tail slide with the 401.

Where's your limit pot set to?

I've been told that the 401 is good for 30 size and smaller, I have a 601 on my Sceadu

Methinks you were told wrong. Guys out here fly them with very good results on 90's . . . and very commonly on 50's . . .

i got a Sceadu EVO SWM w/ Hyper 50, Hatori 522, 9255's, 401 w/9254
and using 14MZ

my gain is 75% Heading Hold and i can do hurricanes and HUGE tailslides all day long

What Tx are you using?

if u using spektrum, JR, then your gain should be at 75%mark to tell the 401 u want 50% HH gain

also put the heli in RATE mode, then hold a stable hover and adjust mechanically till the tail dont drift, making sure there is NO SUBTRIM AT ALL

and the ATV's are 110 left&right
set the delay on the 401 to just off 0 and limit to about 110%

once u have achieved a stable hover in RATE MODE then land, turn off the heli, put the Tx in HH mode, turn on the heli and make sure the 401 initialises in HH mode, hover to make sure it is set correctly, and fly

also note this is MY personal settings and setup plan, you might have a different view, good luck either way

so Barra, if what u saying is true, then lets say for example on the GEAR channel the + is the HH side and the - is Rate...therefore the whole + side would be HH so u can achieve from 1% right thru to 100% and every incrementous one in between? Just liek Futaba for example?

i will have to check it out on a mates DX7, i was always under that impression.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Menace - I'm using a Futaba 9ZAP. I have my delay set to 0 and the limit set at the max value. I'll try setting it up in rate mode first - I've always done it HH. I'm pretty sure all of my sub-trims are set at zero - I was warned of this right at the start - I'll go back and check though.

I haven't looked at the end points with a 611 yet but on the gyro gain menu 75 and 25 do not map directly to 50 hh and 50 rate mode.

I'll check the numbers when I get home.

On a JR transmitter, the 75% will only represent 50% gain to the gyro if the end points are set to 150% on that channel. If the end points are at 100%, then the gyro will see 66% (2/3) gain at 100%

I, personally, have never been able to exorcise the performance out of a 401 that so many claim to get. They are a good gyro for the price, but only a mid-range gyro.

The only thing I can venture to suggest would be to move the ball out on the servo arm. If memory serves I found 18-19 mm to work better. If you are having low gain values before hunting, look into better vibration isolation, which should include opening the case and making sure the internals are not moving inside.
