Has anyone converted a Caliber 30 to electric?

Please give me some advice, such as what motor can I use with the stock gear ratio of 9.615:1, and 1800 head speed? (17307rpm motor)

Will I get better performance if I change the gear ratio, and use a faster motor?

What ESC should I use?

I will be flying gentle aerobatics, and also lifting a camera mount which weighs about 1Kg. (Not at the same time)

The Caliber is lighter than the Raptor, and the belt drive should make the motor alignment much easier. I have a brother with a machine shop who can make the motor mount for me.

I thought about the Caliber to convert as the belt drive seemed an easy option to mod the gear ratio but never found a cheap one. I ran a Kalt 30 electric that needed 20 cells on a brushed motor to keep it in the air and it was a great model I would think it would be about the same weight, if you want to keep the original gear ratio I would think you are going to need the same 16+ cell get up as the logo 16. If you are going brushless you need to find one with the right rev/volt assuming that you will only see about 1.1 V per cell when running. Its an expensive jump to be the first to convert ,so search the Runryder & rc group forums for raptor/hawk specs and take a lead from there.
I ended up modifying a JR voyager 50 to get a bigger blade area, its nice & tracks well around the sky but I get better duration from my Logo 10 for 1/2 the cell count. I just enjoyed the challenge but its hard and expensive work I will post a photo of mine later.
Best of luck

Someone gave me this formula for determining headspeed. It seemed to work for my ECO.
1.1 x cell # x KV / ratio = HS

I've also got some spreadsheets I grabbed off of ezone. U need excell for them though. I didn't use them 'cause I just have the ECO. But they may work for u. They were posted to a public forum. So I guess ther is no harm in passing them around. PM me if u want them.

Smudge,
You'll need a gear ratio between 11-12:1 for it to fly without bogging when you dump a lot of pitch on it. I recommend that gear ratio and a Mega 22/45/3 (1000kv) with 16-20 cells. The mega is the least expensive of the large brushless motors and works great. You can also check out fxaeromodels.com for more options and advice.

BTW, go to the electric helicopter forum on ezonemag.com - that's about the best one around.

Smudge,
Check out the website which hosts the video in this

one of my recent posts.

It should be an excellent start, since the caliber and raptor are so similar in weight and overall dimensions, as you say the belt should make the c30 a little easier to convert.
Cheers

Caliber would be a cool heli to convert, except the uncommon pinion gear. Wouldn't you need a pinion "pulley" for the belt instead of a common pinion gear?

Do let us know what you find. I'd be interested in converting one if the gear ratio problem can be solved.
