Can someone explain how I would go about using sg100 for fades from one basecoat to another. I understand that it helps blend the colors much better. Do you mix it into the paint or shoot one color, then sg100 then the other?

This is what I got off the HOK tech page:

Quote
Tricks or tips

When trying to achieve a blend from one Shimrin base coat color into another, use SG-100 as a let down base to desaturate the pigment and allow a more gradual fade from one color to the other. Using SG-100 in this way can also help achieve an undetectable blend on a repair job that was done in a PBC, FBC or BC base coat.

The way I do it is use a color to tint the SG100. Try asking your question here:

This is a great place for asking questions. There is a HOK rep that frequents that forum - his name is Brian Lynch. They should be able to go into more detail for you.

I found some more info on it in the HOK pdf pages. They do recommend mixing the sg100 with the base colors for a smooth transition from one color to another. They are both 2:1 ratios of paint/reducer. So if I understand correctly, the mix should be:

-2 parts paint
-2 parts sg100
-2 parts reducer

This would make it 4 parts paint / sg100 to 2 parts reducer = 2:1

Or do you pre-mix the paint and sg100 and then reduce 2:1

Thanks for the link angelob, there's a lot of useful info on that site

I use "Just a little" (about 15%)

The SG100 is a 'carrier' for the paint. It's easier to think of adding a little paint to the SG100, instead of adding SG100 to the paint.

Does that help?

Ok so Dave adds about 15% paint to his sg100. I was reading your article in RC heli mag about fades and SG100. Here's a quote I pulled from it "mix some black into the sg100 and reduce until it has the viscosity of water."

And Bill you do the same? Adding paint to the sg100 to get a desired color?

I'm not sure why I'm having trouble understanding so let me lay out a scenario.
Lets say I want to fade from yellow to orange...
-white base coat 2:1 mix
-yellow 2:1 mix
-fade in the orange with 15% orange paint to tint to the Sg100 so 2:1 + 15% mix

Now do I have it right? Thanks for the help guys

That's not quite it, Mike. You have the white and yellow correct. You then spray orange with the regular 2:1 mix, but don't run it quite all the way up to the yellow. You need the 2:1 mix to get good coverage. Finally, prepare the 15% mix of orange and lightly spray it on the fade line where the yellow and orange merge.

With yellow and orange fades that is really not necessary as they are in the same color family and look fine just spraying them both with the 2:1 mix. If you are fading colors like yellow and blue, the SG100 method is helpful.

All you're really doing with the SG100 is spraying on a material with very little paint pigment in it, so it doesn't produce such a harsh fade line.

how does sg100 differ from a thinner/reducer like ru311? doesn't ru311 have the same effect of reducing the amount of pigment in a given volume of paint mixture? granted the ru311 evaporates... does the sg100 not?

SG100 is basically clear lacquer - it's just like all HOK paint, but without the pigment. Thinner, like RU311, has no 'carrier' in it - lacquer does.

You can get a similar 'fade' effect by just tinning the paint - up to a point. You will, however, get a finer fade, with more control, by using the SG100 mix as outlined above. Thinning the paint too much, trying to get the SG100 effect, will cause the spray to be too watery, giving you runs and uneven coverage.

This sg100 works very well. It takes some getting used to but I'm fairly pleased with the results. Here is my latest canopy
