OK - I went with the medium settings - 640 x 368
2600 bitrate

The output size is right but the quality is very poor now???

My HD experience

Derek,

Good write up. Personally I don't consider an interlaced camera useable for AV and our customers don't either. Consumer camcorders don't have adequate manual controls either IMO. Where a helicam shines is in providing uncommon dynamic movements of the camera. Interlaced video looks okay for static shots but then whats the point of having a platform capable of moving anywhere in 3 dimensional space if it sits static or creeps slowly?

We only shoot 720p at 60fps. Sometimes if the DP insists we will drop frame rate a bit (if the movements will handle it without strobing too badly). Sometimes a little strobing is desired to match the ground shots frame rate. The twitter that shows up with movement of straight lines out of an interlaced camera just look terrible to me. FCP is a great program and smoothcam is widely regarded as the best motion filter available and even it can't clean interlaced up if there is movement and hard straight lines.

I'm trying to follow along. Why use a camera that shoots 1080i if 720p is going to be the final output? Are there cameras out there that shoot 720p and would be good for AV use?

The reason i used the Sony HC5 was because its cheap, its sony, miniDV and it works. Knowing what i know now about interlacing would i still go with the HC5 for my helicam? You bet for the biggest reason is that its cheap to replace.

When i start shooting more this summer i will rent a good 720p camera and insure it, but for what i am doing the hc5 works great as long as i deinterlace it.

KarbonBird, thats one of the reasons i have stopped all together using premiere. its a decent editor but really i found that in previous version the quality of video to suffer.

Can you post your video up so we can see how bad it looks? or just a screen shot might do. Can you also post a screen shot of what settings you are using in your export window?

Its been about 5 versions since i used premiere so i dont know how much help i will be.

The primary reason I shoot with an HC5 is it allows me to fly a small Trex600 platform. I prefer the smaller platfroms because you can't get a big ship swinging 800's to the locations I shoot. You have to be able to ride, ski, hike, climb with everything. And a HVX200 on a Joker isn't going to get there without a crew of sherpa's.

That said, I now have a Sony EX1 with about every conceivable framerate available.......but I don't have a heli to haul it. Perhaps in the near future.

Trackhead, your joker will haul that beast of a camera. hell my 700mm joker2 would. Only problem is it will need to be a underslung mount as getting enough weight at the tail to counter balance that brick up front would be fun to say the least.
I chose the hc5 for replacement cost and size as well. While my joker 2 swings 700mm blades and could lift a larger camera. i find that the hc5 is just the right power to weight ratio for 15+ minute flights with the HC5 strapped up front.

Taking it on hikes with me so far hasn't been too bad. I will say that with 8 pounds of batteries, 10lbs helicopter + radio, camera gear and misc tools i think im packing around over 20lbs when i go out. At the end of the day im tired, but i wouldn't have it any other way

I decided to skip the Joker. Working on a turbine platform.

Back on topic:

I capture my 1080i footage and prepare it for Deshaker by rendering it to Cineform Intermediary at 1080 24p. Deshaker handles this fine, and Cineform does a good job at converting it to 24p.

Simple work around.

turbine platform would work great, which one are you looking at? I have been thinking about picking up a turbine for a long time now. Depending on how well the summer goes i may pick one up in the fall.

So you convert to 24p? I had poundered doing just that since film is at 24. I think i will try that next. I am unfamilar with cineform intermediary is that a codec? and what software are you using to convert it to that?

Okay, I was thinking you could get a camera the same size as an HC5 that shoots 720p.

Awesome, please share your experiences with it in this thread. HD is a fairly new medium with information spattered all throughout the web sometimes making to hard to find information.

I just got back from shooting some video at Juanita Bay here in kirkland, although i just was looking at the video(which i shot blind) and noticed i may have had the camera angled down a little too much. I am going to start processing it later tonight and as i do i will be creating a how to log for my process.

I'm going to need those "How to" steps for the work flow. I have Sony Vegas 7 and Adobe Premiere 2.0 but I have barely played with them. I had a HC3 last year but my heli/setup at the time was not one for shooting video.

I'm sure I'll be asking "So how do I ......?"

Oh, ebay for $564.

Never used vegas, and haven't use premiere in a very long time, since version 6 i believe. Im using Final Cut Pro and Shake 4 for all compositing

The processes will be roughly the same, just different

Rerazor,

1080i is not dead, and is a completely valid workflow.
Don't worry!

All the first generation HDV cams shot in 1080i, most of them still do. Think about who your client is, or better yet, your end viewer.

Just a question on preparing an avi for deshaker ...

Does the project have to be 1080 60i, footage processed then rendered to 1080 - then run through deshaker? Does deshaker output have to be 1080 HD - then the very last step in Vegas drop the size to 720? Just a bit confused about this.

I dont use deshaker any more. But i can tell you that before you run the deshaker filter in virtual dub that you will need to have removed the interlacing.

So what i am doing in shake now(which i will do a write up on) is importing my video, deinterlacing it and retiming it to 24p, so now my source video is 1080p. Then run smoothcam and any additional filters. export, then back into final cut where i set my project as 1080p, do my video editing, then export as 720p.

I know of a programe that edits native AVCHD, it's called pinnacle studio 11. Check out their website & see for yourself. Sony vegas 8 does AVCHD, but Not from my Panasonic HDC-SD9, which is such a shame

When I import into Sony Vegas from my HC5 the project properties set it as 1080-24p,, Deinterlace as Interpolate, Field order as None (progressive). Do I want to change these settings?

After edit what should I render as (which .avi template. 1080-60i, 1080-50i, 1080-24p) for deshaker?

1080-24p uses cineform 2.5 codec.
