As some of you know HPI bought Kalt. Over the last year we have been hearing that HPI is going to support Kalt Barons... HPI even had a Forum for the Kalt Airforce, such as it was.

Well over the past week or so HPI's web site has been GONE. Now it's back and after reviewing it all the Air related links pages and forums are GONE. This is significant to the state of the Kalt line of Helicopters. I would be wary before making that purchase from any store concidering HPI's present obvious trending.

I could be wrong on this one but you won't see me buying a Kalt anything till I see web support for it. I truly believe you can tell the state of a busness by how much they invest in ads and the web is the biggest ad site a company can have.

If you check this URL, you'll see on page 7 or so a new

Translate it with babelfish.altavista.com.

Don't laugh too much... at least it's workable.

The Caliber 30 looks nice.

The president of HPI, a Japanese gentleman, joined our club a few weeks ago. I'm going to try to ask him a bit about what their plans are for the Kalt line. I heard he might go to the San Diego Fun Fly since it's at our club's field.

Interesting; ask him if that rumored deal about swapping in an old Kalt airframe for 50% off on a new HPI helo is still in the mill; of course, HPI needs to PRODUCE a helo first...

You have a good eye, Howard. I had to enlarge those pictures to even see the HPI logo. Getting old is hell...

Looks like they hired the same guy Taya did to do the canopy, eh???

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that looked like an all-metal, high-specification machine to me. If so, and they are wanting to break into the market, BAD decision, IMO. They need something to challenge the Raptor's supremacy in the plastic 30 market. Same deal with that Caliber 30. Very few people (in the US, anyway) are going to pay 60 prices for a souped-up 30, no matter how spiffy it is. Just ask AlTech how many Shuttle RGs they've sold... Of course, the machine in that photo may BE a 60; you really can't tell. Did anybody do the translation?

Still, if HPI gets it's muscle behind a project, I don't think anything about it will be half-stepping. I have one of their cars, and overall it's quality is quite a step above most of the competition. I looked at everything available before buying it for my grandson, and after six months of pretty hard use it has been surprisingly durable.

Anyway, it all will be interesting to watch unfold; in the meantime, I'll just happily putz around with my X-Cells...

I was in Heliproz last week and they had a significant amount of the HPI label (Kalt) parts in-stock. They also had several of the Heli hits in stock.(Mercury Line) I talked to Eric and he said that they have not had any problem getting parts. Don't know if it was hype or not but they did seem to have most everything one would need.

Some parts are becoming scarce; bottom line is that no new parts are being produced at this time. Airtronics apparently had a pretty big stash, but these are being used up.

HeliProz has actually had some parts produced; like Baron tail rotor output shafts. But other, complicated parts (like tail rotor transmission case moldings) are drying up fast.

Eric thinks that HPI is about to have one of their other proprietary companies that support the r/c car business gear up to produce Kalt parts. From the link that Howard provided, it would appear that HPI is actively working on it's own designs. Mr. Kouchie (HPI's heli guy in Kalifornia) told that exact thing many months ago. Again, given the firm's obvious success in the car industry, I have no doubt that HPI can indeed market a good, viable helicopter. The question is, will they go after the "right" market?

And the other question is, will they continue to fully support the old (old meaning ships that were in production when they bought the company) Kalt line?

?Quien sabe?

Go to heliproz site and they tell you that parts are being produced again and they will have a wall full of all parts within a few weeks. I believed them so much that I ordered a Baron. Hope they arent lieing or they just lost a customer, not to mention me being pi**ed off.

Maybe it would be good to update you guys about HPI.

Mr. Tatsuro Watanabe, HPI's president, was in touch with me and their intention is to continue the Kalt line under HPI. You can talk to David Kochi at HPI.
Mr. Watanabe directed David to send us a Kalt Baron for the San Diego Fun Fly which went into the Raffle prizes.

Out of that interaction and from their being a sponsor to the fun fly I would tend to think they are serious about continuing the line.
You can also ask their sponsored pilot Alan Szabo, he's in touch with them all the time and was at the fun fly with the HPI banners.

Sure hope they continue to support the Baron. I think it is the best 30 plastic ship I have seen and built. I admit to being new (only in the hobby a year) but still think it is sweet.
