Michael88997- I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I've got a 450 right now, still working on different orientations, and I'm dying to get a nitro - likely a pantara. Can you elaborate on your comments about loving the pantara but not loving nitro, etc? You can PM me if you want... (I've been searching for threads on the issue and reading them, but since you seem to have first hand experience...)

what he means is that the pantera is a really good,no scratch that,excellent heli. but the mess,the smoke,the noise,all that stuff that some people like and some dont,just personal pref i guess. i for one love the power and ease of use with electric. i mean cmon 4 horsepower in a 50 size frame,hell yeah its got pop. i know jbeech has got some ideas in that noggin. i just really want to build one with e power.i have the equipment to mill parts and i can build and design pretty damn good. so i just was wondering if some one had already tried this. thinking pantera. im thinking really hard.!!

yea the pantera was a excellent heli with awesome support... but having to buy expensive gas and worrying about the heli choking on the way out to the pad... the noise because i just fly in fields mostly not ama clubs, and tuning, here in texas its 90degrees one day and 60 the next. on my electric you just plug it in and go and as long as you take care of the lipos they will last a while... and yea my hurricane 550 on a z30 motor is gonna be insane. i would love to have a pantera 500 that uses a like 500mm blades or the size of a trex 500 would be good to. the choise between nitro and electric is really preference, but nitros are a pain to start sometimes and plus i want to be a engineer majoring in electroics so i like messing with electrics more than nitro.

o and i forgot to add that im going to be attending UNT in the fall and I will be in student living and they would not allow me to store nitro so that was the main reason i switched...

I'm currently planning a Pantera conversion. Just sold the super charger that is supposed to fund the project. I missed my target for funds, so we'll see how far this stretches. There is a plethora of information on converting Raptor 50's, which is what I've been doing my research on.
I'm choosing to do a conversion for two reasons;
One - the club I am currently a member of is an electric only club. I love my nitro Pantera, nitro in general, but I want to be able to fly at the club field. Finding empty lots/fields without driving for half an our is a challenge. Too much growth around here. (long story short, I can't snatch more than an hour or so of flying time out of my schedule any particular day, so I have to fly close or not at all- club field is 5 min away)
Two - not actually my cash. I'm doing the build for a friend. While I can use and maintain the heli, he wants something big and stable he can take and learn on without the nitro support.

So, I'm shooting for 7-8 min flight times with mellow flight.
We know that Pantera has 8.7:1 gearing and module (pitch) 1.0 from research on RunRyder. I'm currently looking at the Z-Power Z-50-800 motor with 780 KV on a 10t pinion like stock. So at 22.2 w/6 LiPo we have a 100% head speed of 2041 and a realistic 80% head speed of 1633 - which with 620mm blades I think is worth a shot.
I figured I'd post in the Pantera section once I started the build.
The biggest challenge is trying to keep the cost down and still find batteries. I was going to start with some low end lipos to get the project off the ground, literally. And if all goes well and my buddy loves it over his Blade CP Pro, see if he won't pick up a set of A123s for a second set. I'm still deciding the ESC, looking for a decent value that I can stay in budget with.
I'll post photos when I get going

Email me, subject "E-Pantera" and I'll respond with some info and pictures on converting a P50 to electic once I'm back in the office the Tuesday after Memorial Day (I'm in Phoenix the rest of the week). Anyway, it's pretty easy actually . . . but once you figure what the 3 packs will cost you plus a motor and speed control, I suspect you'll soon discover why 5600-class electrics are slow sellers nowadays (yup, it's a butt load of money vs. fuel). But the choice is yours and I'll be happy to share the conversion info I have.
