e-Electric Motors & Controllers > "Old Style" CC Pheonix 25a ESC

Going thru my stuff I found an older CC Pheonix 25 amp ESC and in the package is a note stating that it is the "Old Style" that is not Castle link compatible. Is that the only difference? Would this be suitable for small heli use?

Thanks

The older ones had a single BEC regulator, and only rated for 1.5 A. The software also had trouble starting some outrunners. I wouldn't run it in a heli without a separate BEC. It will probably brown-out after a minute of flight.

I was planning on running a separate BEC anyways so I should be OK then. I have both so I really don't "want" to spend $50.00 on a new ESC if I don't have to. I guess I'll give it a try.
Thanks

I'd recommend using that ESC alongside the sort of motor that was popular when the ESC was made - something like a Hacker B20 or Himaxx 2025 is a good match. Most of the currently popular outrunners are very similar to ones that the early P25s didn't like.

Not being an electric guru or anything, what are the signs of a motor not working with the ESC? If it runs on the ground for an entire battery, wouldn't it be OK in the air?

Thanks

The only problems I'd expect are either difficulty starting the motor (the motor just vibrates back and forward rather than spinning) or hot running of the ESC and motor. Both of those will show up in a ground check. Probably you wont have either problem, but Castle have been through a lot of firmware revisions since that ESC was made, some of which was about making the ESC work better with new motors (especially high KV outrunners).

It's always a good idea to keep the first flight short and check the motor, ESC and battery temperatures until you have confidence in any new setup.
