Compass Knight 50 > K3D first flight (sorta)

It didn't turn out all that great - the clutch was slipping pretty bad. If you're putting together a K3D right now, clean the gunky shipping oil out of the clutch bell.

My heli turned out to be 7 lbs 6 ounces, RTF minus fuel. It's tailheavy and needs another 2-3 ounces up front to balance, so I've got some carbon boom supports coming (like always it seems...). If you use a 6 ounce battery/regulator, you should balance just about right with the forward tail rotor servo relocation kit.

I sprayed some silicone spray on the tail belt and it really seemed to free things up.

Tomorrow I'll give it another try.

Dave,

You will really like the way these machines fly. I flew mine this morning.

Mine just needs a better pilot!

Have fun.

these helis definitely "bed in" takes 3-4 tanks to really come alive as all the ball links etc free up. by the time the engine is run in everything should be spot on.

i run the tail at the back with a fromeco 2s2p battery and the CG is spot on.

That battery would make a difference on the CG. My battery & regulator combined weigh about 3 ounces. We'll see how it balances when the carbon boom supports show up, it should be pretty darn close. Besides, then the tail will have an all-black look, the silver boom supports look a little strange against the black boom and black vertical fin.

ps - nice flying videos, adey. that backwards sideways tic-tocking loop is a sick move!

My set made mine slightly nose heavy when tank empty and perfect balance at half tank. I played around with different setups. You can feel the difference changing the CG.

Today went quite a bit better in the end. It took a couple flights but the clutch finally stopped slipping. I guess I finally smoked all the oil out of the clutch liner. I've got to say that this is one heck of a heli, the stock setup worked great out of the box. FFF tracked smooth and straight, no pitch-up or down tendency, hovering was stable and pretty locked in for a 3D heli, and the cyclic & collective response is everything i could want (i'm going to turn the cyclic down just a little actually). It took me several weeks to get my evo 90 to fly like how this flies right out of the box. Compass definitely did their homework on this head, it works real well. I was using old V-blades and plan to switch to rotortechs when the LHS gets the 610 3D's back in stock.

I got some goodies in today for the K3D. I got the align carbon boom supports and the quick UK boom support clamp for the trex 600 and they fit on the heli just fine. The align boom supports are an inch or two shorter than the compass boom supports, we'll have to see how they work in flight.

Anyway, now that i have a small digital scale, i can post some weights:

aligh boom supports - .78 oz
QUK boom clamp - .24 oz (includes screws)
total = 1.02 oz

compass boom suppts - 1.61 oz
K3D boom clamp - .41 oz (includes bolts, washers, nuts)
total = 2.02 oz

The align boom supports come already assembled, and because of this they won't work with the stock boom support mount as the boom supports need mounting screws on the boom that are horizontal rather than vertical. So, if you get the boom supports, you'll need to come up with a different clamp.

Another way to drop weight in the tail of the 3D is with a CF tail boom. Stock black aluminum boom weighs 2-1/2 ounces, I have been using the RJX Extreme CF boom that weighs 1-3/8 ounces. That allows me to keep the tail servo in back, and use the lighter batteries.

Probably isn't worth the 25 bucks for the carbon boom just for the weight savings, but I really prefer the tail servo in the back. I also prefer not to have to use a boat anchor for the receiver pack .

Today was fun (in between rainshowers). The t-rex boom supports had a buzz around 2000 rpm but an extra shim in the tail shaft to get rid of the play and swapping the tail rotor blades one for the other for a little better balancing took care of that problem.

It turns out the heli does have a pitch-down tendency in fast flight. I'll have to experiment with flybar weights and different paddles until i get it under control.

The dampening is pretty sloppy. I wonder when the updated 8mm dampeners will be released?

Anyway, i'm sure i'll get these little things sorted before too long, but the heli still really impresses me. I'm looking forward to burning lots of nitro in the thing.

make sure your head timing is correct.
the new blades may also resolve that.

glad your enjoying it, they do fly well

the tail servo relocation to the front is a big shift in the weight also, that helps cg a bunch.
i'm running a 4000mah pack to get my cg good with my servo moved to the back again

only you have the power to make no difference!
