Ok Guys,

I need a computer GURU.

Not too long ago i posted a thread asking why my computer wont run disk defrag and it never was resolved. Now i have another problem.

I want to restore my computer and something isn't working right with the recovery CD.

When i have the computer on and i insert the recovery disk, it just opens the explorer and all i can do is view the files on the disk. Maybe I'm doing something wrong here?

When i put the CD in and restart it, the screen appears and it says it is loading windows files. It seems to read the disk. then once the files load the screen has that little line flashing up in the upper left corner. then it stops flashing, the CD seems to stop spinning and the computer screen remains blank. NOTHING!!


I just want to restore it back to the original settings!

Is there a way to force the computer to read the CD??

Anything is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

HP dv9000
Intel core 2 duo t7200
2gb ram
Windows Vista 32-bit OS

There are plenty of others with more knowledge than me on this subject, but I'd bet that if you set your BIOS to boot first from the CD/DVD and then reboot with the restore disc in the drive you'll find a recovery/restore console of some sort that will walk you through the process.

When you say BIOS, are you talking about pressing f10 during start up to get to that menu? Sorry, but computer aren't my thing. IF so I'll give it a shot! Thanks!

It's possible you do not have enough disk space to do the defrag.. You will need to clean off some files you do not need to get it to run unless there is a corruption issue. Go to Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Delete the temporary internet files, etc to free up some disk space there. Once you have freed up some space, try it again. There also could be many other issues as well. Changing the boot disk to the cd in the bios should force a boot to the cd/dvd reader.

You did say Win Vista, So sorry bout that!

Different systems use different keys to access the BIOS so your's may be F10 (mine uses the delete key). Watch your screen when you first power up and there should be a prompt that tells what to hit to enter setup. Once there look for something along the lines of First Boot Device and make your CD/DVD the first device then save and exit. Now with the disk in the drive, restart and there will likely be a menu of some sort to work from after that (assumes the Restore disk is bootable). Remember to change the first boot device back to the hard drive after you're all done.

That's the short answer , hopefully someone with more info that I have will come along and chime in.

If Windows Error Recovery fails to fix the problem automatically, follow the steps below to recover the system using Recovery Manager.

Reboot the notebook PC and press F11 when the HP logo displays on the notebook PC display.

The HP Recovery Manager displays. Click Next .

Select Yes and then click Next .

The Recovery Manager restores the notebook PC to the factory image.

it is also possible that the system restore can't take place because you simply don't have enough disk space...

With respect to the defrag issue... Something that will cause defrag to never complete is an application accessing the hard drive while degrag is running. This may be happening to you. To get around this Windows can be booted into what is called Safe Mode. In this mode only the basic, necessary OS modules are initialized and all upper lever functions are not. This includes most of the additional programs you've installed after getting your computer. Such an environment is great for testing, troubleshooting and diagnostics. From safe mode you should be able to run a complete defrag.

To get into safe mode reboot your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard towards the end of your BIOS splash screen but before the "black background with Windows XP" startup. Kinda tricky but I always just watch the system boot and just before I think it'll switch to the Windows XP background start pressing F8. You know you got it right when you're presented with a menu showing several boot options - the top one being Safe Mode. Choose it and you're on your way.

After completing your task in Safe Mode simply reboot the computer and it will automatically boot back into normal mode.

he's not trying to use system restore, he's trying to recover his computer with the HP supplied recovery disc.

to the OP,

I would go out and get an XP disc and not even bother with Vista...
