Hi all,

As you will no doubt be aware, I'm trying to track down a vibration on my helicopter. As tracking it down is proving more difficult than tracking down a fart in a jacuuzi, I'm having to be extra anal when it comes to things like rotor balance .... so I made my own magnetic rotor balancer

Has worked very nicely I bet you balancing the rotors hasn't solved my vibration problem but hey, it's good to know they're balanced correctly now

Cheers

David

PS. It's 2:26am and I'm tired .... sorry for that poor joke above

I use a length of wood or plastic (the longer the more precise)with a hole drilled in the center of the span. Then I measure equal distances from that pivot point and mark. Two paperclips serve to hang from the wood and hold my blades ... latest improvement is a level afixed just above the pivot point. Drill rod, small diameter pin, or ??? sllighly lubed and inserted into my vise jaws to hold the rod horizontal ... place the drilled out center hole of the wood onto the drill rod (usually a snall screwdriver will suffice) ... check for balance ... if off (not level) adjust paper clip until level ... add blades ... add tape (or whatever) until blades are balanced and voila` ... very cheap balancer ... total cost : free to the cost of a ruler.

Next step is to balance CG of individual blades by moving the tape until both blades individually balance (at the same distance from mounting hole) on a vertical knife edge ... regular knife, razor blade ... you get the picture. It has worked for me for many years!

David, your magnets can carry the main blades?? Freaky.

I use the Dubro to balance the Entire rotor head. Here's a link (sorry didn't post pic of balancing 600 mm blades - ran out of "posting steam".

i actually thought the joke above was hilarious, my wife was sitting next to me and i laughed out loud and she had to ask what was so funny, so when i told her the joke all i got was a little roll of the eyes.... oh well i thought it was funny.

"what goes up must come down," hopefully in one piece!

For CG analysis I use angle aluminum, on a table, it forms a precise demarcation point to balance a blade on.

For final balance, I apply about 3" which is .3grms of electrical tape to one blade, hover it, did vibes increase or decrease? Depending on the answer I remove that tape and place it on the other side, making decitions as to tape quantity on one side for a balanced system. This dynamic process is quite precise.

Basically you can say the following when dynamically balancing blades "If I add .3gr to blade A only vibes begin to manifest, however if I add .6gr to blade B only, vibes are equal to the first condition. Thus if I add .15gr to blade B the blades will be dynamically balanced, at the center of the detectable null zone of induced vibrations.

It works for me, and sounds more complicated on paper than it is. Dynamic balancing takes care of many issues that may exist, such as what if one blade grip sits out minimally farther than the other, etc. I hope you get it sorted out, you've been a long time at it.
