Lower reciever was marked " Safe, Fire, Burst".

It was not according to the legal docs...But even if it were, as long as it was not actually able to fire burst it is not illegal to have it say that...Stupid, but not illegal.

Some issues with the DOJ letter:

Quote
Olofson acknowledged to agents that he knew how to convert semi-automatic rifles to machine guns, and agents later found conversion information and instructions on Olofson’s computers.

So?!?!? Anyone with half a brain can figure it out. Install a sear pin....OMG, now all that read this know too!!!!!

Quote
Agents also found e-mail exchanges with third parties on Olofson’s computer wherein Olofson discussed machine guns and ways to avoid federal registration requirements for automatic weapons.

They probably mean building a living trust...LEGAL.

Quote
The Court found that Olofson’s military service and the other evidence in the case suggested he was “incredibly familiar” with firearms,

OK, so now anyone that has served is in trouble.

Sheesh.

Edit... I read most of the AR15 thread....The guy is screwed.
While there is a good argument that a few M16 parts in an AR is not illegal. He had a weapon that he put parts into and it seems it would FA fire.

It seems the ATF found someone doing something stupid and with enough evidence against them to make an example. It still seems to me there is a hell of a lot of other ways this money could have been better spent. I always found it strange it falls under the Treasury, one would think it would be more logical under the DoJ.

Besides, "Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms" should be the name of a convenience store.

Vote smart, vote RP!

A little off topic, but this (or something like it) has been posted here before. I've been able to verify none of it -- but Snopes has nothing yet to refute it.

_____

1) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.

2) Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000.

3) Accidental deaths per physician per year are therefore 0.17

(Statistics courtesy of the US Department of Health and Human Services).

_____

1) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000 (80 million).

2) Accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) are 1500.

3) Accidental deaths per gun owner per year are therefore 0.000018

(Statistics courtesy of the FBI).

_____

So -- gun owners are roughly 9000 times less dangerous than doctors.

Fatal Flaw

First I am a gun nut. With that said I feel gun safety and gun training is severely lacking in this country. The flaw with your argumenment is people go to the doctor after something is wrong, people who are shot by guns are for the most part healthy.

Original post, I have followed the AR15 thread and it is pretty obvious this guy knew what he was doing and intentionally modified an AR lower. Question is why didn't he just get his class III license? I had an SKS where the sear fork broke and luckly the gun only had the 11 round magazine installed and I only had 10 in it but what a surprise. Needless to say I made a quick exit and crap canned that trigger group.

Unfortunately our government has taken the position to make certain type of weapons illegal for most citizens to own like assault rifles. Various laws should be modified to changed as to allow all types of "guns" to be legally held.

It would seem this guy is screwed.

Whether he modified it or not, he shouldn't have tried to sell it.
