Ok, I took my heli outside to test out the mechanics and trim what I needed to trim. My heli cut out twice in the air during a hover about 20 foot up. Normally, I would panick and gone in for the nose dive. This time, I just gave it negative until it was about 5 foot from the ground and gave it full collective then landed it. I figured out the battery can't seem to hold up and is causing me to go into battery fail safe. Its an old battery, so its time may be up. I'm charging another battery right now to test it. If it does the same thing, I'll switch receivers. So far, that's two battery packs that won't hold up. I have 4 analog servos and one digital servo with a 401 gyro on it. I'm using the futaba fasst 6 channel set up. The battery is 4.8volt and it cut out both times on the one tank of fuel. I had just charged the battery prior to flying. If this next battery cuts out, I may have to look elsewhere to the problem.

Man, I miss the eighties.

That could be a number of things. Seems like you have the idea in locating the problem though. If you need help though, we're going to need a lot more information about your setup.

If the battery sent the reciver into failsafe, How come you still had control of the pitch & cyclic to land it.
Failsafe shuts down all controls and puts the engine to stop or ticover, (whichever you set.
Sounds like the engine is quitting from what you say. Please explain it more detail.

on the fasst radio, going into battery failsafe means the throttle will go to a location that you set. Mine is set to idle. I still have control over the cyclic, rudder and pitch, but no throttle. You can regain it by lowering the stick all the way to the bottom and it will give you a few seconds to control the heli into a landing. I also have been having tuning problems on this engine and tuning the engine was my goal today. Hard to tune if you go into fail safe. Since I didn't have the tuning right, when it went into fail safe and lowered the throttle, the engine cut out. I installed a nimh I have. I went out for a tank and a half with out going into battery fail safe. I also think I got the engine tuned. My head speed sounds high, but I can't check the head speed and fly at the same time. So, the next time I go to the field, I'll have my buddy check the head speed so I can get the throttle curve right. I'm wanting a 1800 to 1900 head speed. On a 30, some people prefer less when using wood blades. I want a little more head speed for that quicker response. So, I think the fail safe problem was due to two bad battery packs. I've already clipped the end from one and will be doing the same from another.

One question on engine tuning and I will ask that in a seperate thread. I was just stoked that I didn't wipe out in the two unintentional autos.
