well I'm at work doing the final repairs on the HBK......I lost a swash link in the crash...so yesterday I went to the LHS and got balls/links for a B400.I'm getting rid of the Z bends.....gotta say very nice the balls have a threaded stud and secure with an allen key(good find greggor)and I now have almost 0 slop in the swash assembly....but heres the bonus.......I took 2 of the links and cut them down to about half...put them on the tail pitch slider, connecting to the tail grips....I made them just a little longer than the stock ones....now I have full travel and smooth as silk...I leave them a little(just the tiniest bit)loose so they "pivot"...now the tail travels all the way and is smooth........0 pitch is maybe 2 deg off from center but since we are starting with about 7-8 deg anyway I cant see how this will matter....I will test flight in an hour or so and let you know of the results

Fender, great idea, thanks for sharing this. Someone else here (sorry don't remember who) mentioned they had done this mod as well. Since then, I've been contemplating doing it, as well as consideirng any negative side effects. True, it does put the pitch slider more toward the center. That might help solve the non-linear travel issues. As it stands now, with the servo horn at 90 (at least with my servo horn), the servo has to move past the 2 oclock postition, almost to 3-oclock, to get the pitch slider to reach the outside edge of the shaft. Going the other way, it only needs to go to 10 oclock to get full travel (or at least as far as I want to go). I currently have my servo horn one spline to the rear to provide equal throw in both directions. Moving the slider more toward the center would solve that.

The other thought I had was to run the ball links as long as possible while still maintaing the nessessary travel. This would reduce the required angle on the pivot. The pivot is really the weak part of the tail design and I'd like to get rid of it with the B400 tail. But before I do that, I think I'll try longer ball links.

Let us know how this works out.

I too am about ready for some balls on the servo arms. My z-bends have wallowed out the holes to the point where there like 1/32" play in them. I have some Mini balls and link ends but I do like the idea of using B400 stuff cause it is the same size.
