I did not won’t to hijack another thread, so here is the question. I have an eagle tree monitor on my heli, and right now the engine temperature is between 190 and 200. When I put my finger on the back plate I can barley hold it there for 3 seconds? People say that 3 seconds is two short, but yet the engine is not above 200. I heard that the engine likes to be around 210 and 215. I have a carbsmart and it stays around the middle which is 1 and ¼ turn out. So should I rely on the temperature probe, or my finger?

Rely on the engine's performance instead of either.

I'm with Eddie here, you want (or would like) your engine tuned right or tuned 1 or 2 clicks rich just under it's peak power,,

but fan cooling comes into play here too, meaning some helis fans cool better than others,, so if you tune for good power but your temp is 230 you may want to richen it up some,

but then again who is to say 230 is too hot ????????

The problem with tuning for a specific temp and the backplate test is that they are pretty subjective. Temps will vary with weather conditions, fuel used, elevations, altitude density, etc. What one engine likes temp wise another engine may not. The backplate test is a little better, but again, it can be very subjective based on what each specific pilot thinkgs is too hot. For examply, you may have one pilot able to hold his finger on the backplate for 5 seconds before he feels it's too hot to hold any longer and yet another pilot who can hold it for 10 seconds even though it's the same temp. We all have different tolerances for pain.

The best way to tune an engine is to listen to it and go by how it's performing. This comes with time and experience.
