For AP or AV work and almost the same money minus extra batteries, I could 1. upconvert my Raptor 30 to a Raptor 50 or, 2. Buy a T-Rex 600 electric heli. What would you guys do? I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this already, just not sure which heli would be the best for AP and AV work???

Thanks
Denny

I would definitely go with T-600 electric, much smoother. Only draw back is battery and charging time.

It can be done with either. I started with a Gohbee Stinger 50, but switched to a Trex600 and will never go back. It seemed that every other shot had smoke in the picture. I love the ease of the Trex600. Yes, the battery charging is about the only negative, but worth it. I just got a gasser to try out as well, but should not have the smoke issues like the nitro birds.

Good luck with whatever you decide, it is very addicting.

But I bet he couldn't buy a ship like yours for the cost of a T600E....

We have set ourselves up with two Trex-600E helis. Now we are starting to travel (day-shoots), we always have a spare. Troubleshoot in your own time!!! Two chargers, seven packs (4 of which are cheapees costing less than 2 of the others).

7 minute flights don't seam much but with planning on the ground with your camera operator in advance means our average time in the air is less than 2 minutes per sortee. If I need to be more than 200 yards away, I will walk there rather than fly (if possible). It is safer... and easier to fly accurately.

I am using cheap batteries. With no 3D flying, our peak current isn't high. Fly foward / use transitional lift when climbing. Your packs will love you for it. I also have a Wattmeter on board telling me how many mA I've used - as well as a low-volt alarm. Cells still fail so the alarm is always there. The wattmeter takes the guesswork out of batery useage and lets you do that quick 90 second re-shoot if required on the same pack.

An air star is on the "wanted" list when we have video work to justify $4k. At the moment, we are getting work because we are electric!!!

Pete, Trex 500, Trex600 Al, Low-volt alarms - check the gallery for my alarms ,GY401, DX7.

It is hard to say conclusively on a Trex600 or gas heli ... when you factor in the flight time . battery costs ... you have not mentioned payload needs ...

The best (if your budget permits) is to have a small, a medium and a large (gasser) heli as each has a particular application. Starting with a medium - e.g. T-Rex 600 is a good "middle ground" option as you should be able to do good stills and some video as well. As mentioned by others - battery costs are a factor to consider. I have 3 x 4900 Flightpowers that are sufficient to run my T-Rex 600 during an average shoot.
