I've got an interesting set up to tell about.

Running 8s with this on 12T
Tonic-X Z15A 1620KV Brushless Outrunner Motor - T-REX 500
This motor is only 138 grams!

and a CC 30HV ESC with a seperate BEC.

401 and 3x 9650 with the a 1x jr 3400 t/r gyro.

full up weight on 8s 2200 is 1760 grams.

Going to to CF landing gear and flybarless taking off another 130 grams or so.

So far I am getting 5.5 minute flights and using 1700ma.

Batteries are cool, motor is cool, esc is cool.

Head speed governed to 2800 RPM.

Enjoy,
Art K.

What packs are you using?

That sure is a high KV motor for 8S, you must have it governed way down to get 2800 rpm!

8s Setup

jakeg1999,
Yep going to the funfly this afternoon but not the rest of the weekend, leaving on vacation. Thanks for asking. Will I see you there today?

EKIM,
I fly 3d. Probably not the hardest 3d. But basically head speed is solid. Does not bog at all. Lots of power. I also fly logo 600 flybarless on 10s that I have pulled over 4hp with so I know what power should feel like.

beeflyer2,

It's not that bad. 1620KV x 30 volts = 48600 / 13.5 gear ratio= 3600 rpm x 90% for slip = 3240 Flying at 2800 is about 86% governed down. Seems to run very well.

Batteries are Zippy R 8s 2200's. Tested these against other packs for internal resistance and they are on par with the best packs I have flown. I also run 10s 4500 zippy r's on my Logo 600 along with FP packs. All the packs fly the same. The Zippy R's are newer so they actually land cooler then the rest of the packs I fly. I have about 25 cycles so far on my Logo 600.

Operating is well within the limitations of the Battery, ESC, and Motor. Max amps on the esc is 30. I average 20 amps during flight. Add another 20% for running the ESC at lower RPM so figure 24 amps. I spike up to 45 amps during hard climbouts but that is OK.

You really want the smallest motor you can put in a helicopter that will not overheat. The batteries do the work. So if this 138gram motor doesn't get to warm it should be fine.

I have about 7 flights so far. I don't see any problems comming up.

Thanks,
Art K.

Is there any way you could post some pics of these Zippy-R packs mounted on the 500? I am very interested in these because you say they are cool after a flight. I have never had cool packs after a flight, mine get to 130F sometimes. I am using 18C 2100 cells though.

Also, can you verify the pack weight? The website has two different weights listed. What type of balance connector do these use?

Jake, did you get to see this setup perform?

Yes, I did see it perform...It worked very well...Art is very focused on keeping it light, and he has done a good job doing so....there is another option for you out there....I have a little over 50 flights on a Neu 1905 1.5Y....So far it's awesome....More power than my 1210, and I gained an additional 45 seconds of flight with the same mah draw...HS increased by 100rpm too....This is by far my favorite motor for this heli...very efficient and well made...It weighs 190 grams, lighter than the 1210, but heavier than the one Art is running....It costs $125, which is not a bad price, especially for a well built American designed motor that is very efficient and not hard on the packs....oh my pack temps are around 115-118 degrees.....

They already are, however like most his motors they are a made to order thing. You can order it through castlecreations.com, usually it takes about 2 weeks or so....Once they become a bit more popular, I am sure some of the online shops will start stocking them....but for now, you should be able to order one....you won't be sorry....
