Synergy R/C Synergy N9 > Swash ball is tight. This can't be normal?

I was just checking over this N9 I picked up a few weeks ago. Pulled the head and started checking the movement. Seemed a little stiff. So I started poping off ball links trying to find the problem. Come to find out, the inner ball of the swash is really tight compared to other helis I have had. The bird flies ok, But I can only imagine how much better it would fly if the swash was not hindered by a stiff ball..

Has anyone else had this issue? Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Viper

Yes, use the hypersizer until they run smooth. It's the same with every kit -- you have to work the balls, you can do that, right? Work the balls? Work them until they run free, like the wind. Know what I mean? Nudge, nudge, say no more ...

Haven't seen a Hypersizer big enough for the swash ball! Make sure the race around the ball hasn't got a dent in it.. You may have to lube the heck out of it and rotate it around another spare mainshaft while the swash is off the heli and see if you can tell what's binding it.. Especially looking at the underside of the swash. It could have been pressed wrong from the get go..

Mine were a little tight when new but they wore in after a few flights. Light oil may help if there is nothing wrong as MB points out. I've seen this in other kits as well.

Main swash ball

I am talking about the MAIN swash ball that goes over the MAIN shaft guys.. Just to clarify..

I think it is dented or something, I worked it for a long time last night, It is a little better, But i think I am going to have to just get a new one. I tried heating it and freazing it then just working the heck out of it with some greas. It is better. but still not as smooth as It should be by any means.

If anyone has any other ideas or a spare swash sitting around they will sell. let me know..

Thanks,
mark

Tight Swashplate

Mark,
I haven't begun to build my Synergy yet as I have been building my Trex 600 and I am on the road right now for a few days. But, Schluter and I think Miniture aircraft had swashplates that you could adust the tension on the swashball by a 2mm setcrew that went into an extra hole on the side of the drive collar part. I had a swashplate that became so loose it was about to fall apart. I saw a set screw backed out and discovered that when I tighened it the ball could become as stiff as you wanted.

PS...you might PM Chuckie on this board.

I understand it's the swash. It sounds like it is too tight of a press fit. Since you may have to buy one anyway, what I would consider doing is to find a way to place a spare mainshaft through the swash ball and use a good amount of side force all the way around and see if that might possibly create some space inside the cavity. Just keep working it, it may only need just a tad of stretching if that is possible.

I don't believe this swash has an adjustment screw.

Remove all the link balls in the inner ring. Someone mentioned they had one with where the threads contacted the bearing and caused some drag.

Yup. I had this happen on two kits. The ball links that go on the inner ring of the swash were just a fuzz longer than they should have been and this distorted the 'race' that the ball slides around in.

Nothing that 5 seconds and a bench grinder couldn't fix.

I took all 4 of the ball links out of the swash and it is still tight.

Check the balls on the inner ring of the swash. I seem to recall reading that the screw on some were long enough to press against the ball when tightened.

<edited> Sorry, I didn't see Vitek's post before I posted mine.

I worked on a new N9 this weekend and the ball in the swash was tight. Like I said this is normal and it will wear in and be smooth after a few fligths.

As Chuckie has said, it will wear in. I just got mine together a month ago, the swash was a little tight. However, after a month of flying it has loosened up and is silky smooth now.

I don't think this one will wera in. I know this heli has been flown at least a gallon before i owned it. It should have worn in by now.

I have 2 replacements comming in. One brand new an one used. It will be replaced.

Thanks for all the help though guys.

A gallon is only 5 -6 flights, not enough time for it to wear in IMHO.
