i was on my way back from fort bragg NC today on I-40 and i saw a single engine low wing aircraft traveling next to the hwy just above the tree tops.. it was banking laft and right like it couldnt decide where it wanted to go.. when it banked left for the last time it dissapeared.. i figured it was just someone screwing off but when i get home there was breaking new of a plane crash in the same area at the same time.. the plane was burnt to a crisp but you can still see the outline of the wings and when i saw this plane i remember trying to figure out what type it was but i could only tell that it had long skinny wings like a diamond aircraft.. i think it was a shade of yellow or gold too im not sure.. anyway the burnt outline looks just like it.. i realy wonder if i witnessed these peoples last moments.. i left a message with the faa incase they wanted to know where i saw it cause it crash a ways from where i saw this plane.. they lost radar contact 15 minutes before it crashed a few miles from where i saw this one.. dunno but its pretty sad anyway two died.

EDIT: Sorry...just realized you wanted colors of not placement of wings

Fast beautiful planes the Lanciar IV-P's are. I hope to build one some day.

Too bad.

Wait..what!?!?! No, that can't be!

It has been several years since I saw AL and his Lancair. If I remember right, the top and bottoms of the wings were white. The top of the fuselage was also white. The bottom 1/2 of the fuselage was charcoal with gold stripes, as were the wing tips.

A piece of one of the plane's wings was found more than a mile away, authorities said.

Probably why you saw it banking back and forth before it crashed. Very sad indeed.

yea i knew it was a low wing and when i saw it i thought it was a glassair..i was close i guess. i was asking about the color on top of the wings.. i wonder why he was yanking and banking near I-40 and ended up crashing a few miles from there.. he couldnt have been more than 75-100 ft AGL when i saw him..

I believe this plane was from the Fort Myers Florida area.

Helibandit,

If you did see the plane before the crash, you should notify the NTSB. Your view of what happened may help figure out the cause and help with closure for the family.

Just my 2 cents.

Very beautiful, very fast, and very very unforgiving. Check their NTSB record, they seem to be over represented, and a high proportion involve fatalities.
