Two things:
1) I looked at the spare OS .50 Hyper bearing that I picked up last year from one of the local hobby shops (as I had already read many of these threads).
The bearing say "NSK" and "Japan" on it. Without opening it, the cage appears to be some sort of plastic (the cage is metal on all of my old OS engines).
2) I pulled the backplate on the Hyper in my Knight 50 today for visual inspection and found out that you can't really do one without pulling the crank. At least on this Hyper, you cannot see the rear bearing due to some sort of flange or web on the crankshaft.
The interior of the motor looks very clean, with no pitting and no discoloration. At this point, with eight to nine gallons through it, I am expecting that the bearing will, at some point, go.

Well if it is a NSK bearing, that will rule out "bearing quality" failure. NSK is one of the top bearing manufacturers in the world.
All my OS have a plastic cage. Only my YS have a metal one.

isn't she beautiful !!well this new SKF is incredibly smooth !! as I turn the inside Race I can NOT even feel the balls turning inside !!, it's much much much smoother compared to the OS replacement bearing I just put in my Hyper 50 two weeks ago, and I tell you that replacement bearing is coming out and the SKF is going in before I run that engine,,
I am also going to buy a NSK bearing from HeliProzz for my other Hyper 50 (when I order Compass parts)
photos,, as you look at the photos you will see the Digital Camera show the machining marks the naked eye can barely see,,

Wasp,
I am very interested in how the SKF bearing works out.
I also see that you are a fellow Knight Flyer (very cool).
Please keep us posted.

Please keep us all posted throughout your experience with this bearing. I think there will be a lot of people who will want one if it works as well as we're all hoping it will!

it seams I just can't win here, I have the new SKF bearing in and now after oiling the front bearing is leaking, it must come from heating the engine,, and the head gaskey is leaking too,, so Monday I have to order heli parts anyway so I will order these idem's too,,
it's just a back side pain, you know..

I got tired of sending motors in for warranty work. I just popped in a cheap bearing from McMaster Carr ($7-8?) and it ran for 2 years with no issues. I put in a new bearing when I went in to replace the ring, but the old one was fine. Go figure.

Yes but thats the thing all cheap bearing are not made the same
How about an all ceramic bearing? Anyone try that yet?

My experience is also that the ceramic bearings don't hold up all that well.

He was asking about an all ceramic, (races too) not a hybrid. As far as I know no one has reported trying one. They are kinda pricey.

Now that looks curious? The TT50 uses a larger bearing in all respects, so even though the engine mounting is the same size the crankcase is machined for a larger bearing and the crankshaft has a larger diameter. I wonder why TT went for the smaller bearing in the Redline 53?
Is 17 x 35 x 8 a special size or available off the shelf?

Everywhere I've checked lists the TT50 rear bearing as the same size as the OS50/YS50/TT53 .
