Pics of my L600 a123 setup.

Setup style: 3D / Sport / Scale ? FAI: Light 3D + Sport
RTF weight if known: About 7 Lbs - will get acurate measurement soon :-)
Ambient Temperature: 20 deg C
Motor and Pinion: Orbit 30-12E Heli Expert - pinion 14t - http://www.plettenberg-motoren.com/U...t30E/Motor.htm
ESC "Brand and size":Jazz 55-10-32 - http://www.kontronik.com/index2e.htm
Lipo "Brand and Size": A123 MEC 12s Solderless Power Tube Packs - http://www.modelelectronicscorp.com...duct.php?pid=13

Length of flight: 6 min
Headspeed: 1700 - 1950 - 2100
Motor Temp "average or on landing": cool
ESC Temp "average" or on landing":cool
Lipo Temp "average or on landing":cool
MAH put back into pack after flight: 2000

The machine feels VERY light and responsive. A123 cells are a great altenative for people who want safer packs and aren't into stick banging 3D.
The Heli Expert motor seems better than my other setup using a Tango motor which surprised me. It draws less current for similar flying style and seems to have as much or more power in the air.

I flew a Trex 600 last season with a similar 12s A123 setup and only got between 5 to 5.5 min per flight. It seemed like a heavy tank compared to the L600 Vbar :-)

Sorry, no vid camera here :-(

It is probably the most responsive AND stable heli I have ever flown including the JR Vibe 90 !

It flies GREAT!

I find I have no interest in flying a heli without vbar now. That ends up being expensive :-)

Probably have over 200 flights on this setup already and it is nothing short of amazing.
Very stable and also very agile at the same time.

I swithced to Rotortech blades and find it flies better now at about 1950 RPM. With the other blades (MAH) it was much better at 2100 RPM.

I have tried MANY helis including the JR Vibe 90 and this is by far the most enjoyable heli I have ever owned.

I have a Scale body waiting for my next Logo 600 vbar machine. It should be in the air next week with a little luck.
I'll post pics when its done.

Scale

What is that going to be, or do we have to wait for pictures next week, and am really going to have to try some 123's myself. Those
MEC power tubes seem a nice way to go.

Im getting a Logo10 and planning on running A123. How does the L10 frame compair to yours? I was thinking 8s on a 1100Kv Motor. Yours looks sharp!

I'm new to the A123 cells but I'm curious how you balance the cells in the tubes. Is balancing still necessary? How would you rate the power compared to a 10s lipo setup?

Dont know about the power tubes, excep they dis assemble easy but if they start out close (voltage) they tend to stay that way. some debate but some, I think most, dont balance.

Scale project:

It's a '50 Size Hughes 500D Scale Fuselage (Green)'

The Logo seems to fit well and I hope to have the electronics in this weekend.

Pictures to follow when I get more 'spare' time :-)

The MEC power tubes are GREAT !

The make a very clean and solid pack.

As for balancing, you don't need to with good a123 cells.
IF the cells are good, they don't need to be balanced. IF a cell goes bad, then just remove it from the MEC pack and replace.

I flew all last season with a123 packs and after the end of the season, I tested them for ballance and they were ALL PERFECT.

Balancing is just not an issue with a123 packs but you can remove the cells and check them periodically. I intend to make that a winter job at the end of the flying season.

This is so much better than running soldered packs.

Not sure of the setup on a L10 but I hear that it's the base for the new L400 which I am eagerly awaiting. Hope the a123s work out in that setup. I wouldn't go back to the old 'bag' lipos anymore.

Hi Crille,

I got my a123 cells from:
http://www.modelelectronicscorp.com...duct.php?pid=13

They have good prices and great service.

I used 2x 6s packs @ $100 per pack so the total cost of one 12s pack is about $200.

The packs are cheaper than regular lipos and you get about 4 times the cycles with no loss in power.

If you can solder, you can make a 10s pack for about $100 (last time I looked) by buying a DeWalt battery pack and dissecting it.

Dewalt 36volt batteries have gone up in price. They are about 140 dollars a pack. Still good value if you intend to build your own packs.

I am running 10s A123 in a logo500 - details are in my gallery. Very good performance but 12s would be better for longer flight times at just 150grams extra weight.

FBoss - I have read of the logo 10 requiring some 'creative work' to get the cells to fit. The A123 suit the slightly bigger machines better than the 425mm helis due to the weight and size of the cells. For a sport setup they will work well in any heli. Gearing and correct motor choice are critical though.

Fergus

Should they be 140.00 now then there wont be a big difference between buying them individualy or even pre assembled and buying the Dewalt pack.

In that case, maybe I'll buy them individually if I want to make another pack. It seems a waste to throw away the charging circuitry and deWalt boxes.

I have found that A123 6s batery packs are 2" wide. The logo 14 is a bit (1.0mm-2.0mm) shorter. Is the 600 wider than the logo14? Have any of you tried A123 packs on a logo 14?

I appreciate your comments
