e-Miniature Aircraft Razor - Ion-X - Bandit > E-Stratus on a diet.

I decided to put one of my Single stage E-stratuses on a diet.
Im already running VBar on it, but it was quite heavy still.

Starting weight (no batteries) : 4024 grams.

First of all, I removed my A123 RX battery + Arizona regulator.
Replace it with BEC (Uberbec) + a DC-Up from Fromeco (incase of power drop)

Then I removed some frame stiffeners (really only need those for nitros)

I bought a generic CF Landning gear set from Esprit ($35), really nice, cuts off 140 grams or so.

Then it hit me, Main shaft, VERY heavy , Replaced it with a Logo 600 hollow mainshaft, with that, I took out the lower bearing and bearingblock running "Ion-X style" instead, replaced the bearingblock with frame-spacers to keep integrity.

Current weight (no batteries): 3610 gram.

But Im not done!

With the Logo 14 shaft the head runs about 1.5cm above what it was before, so what do you do, I ordered a Logo head as well, gonna receive that tomorrow (Ralf @ Mikado swears by that it holds for 710 blades)

Will report back tomorrow what the weight are after the new head.

Anyway, with -414 gram loss, which is more then 10% I had to try it today, so I went to the field, Oh boy what a fun machine to fly

Last thing I might consider is to make a new custom bottomplate, really no need to run 6mm CF there.
also might consider changing the swash to a lighter one as well.

Edit: Not Logo 600 shaft, It was a Logo 14 shaft

What about the canopy? You can make a light lay-up and shave a good bit of weight off.

Yep, however, Im picky about the colors on the canopy when I fly
but I have a prepped and primed canopy laying around, so I already have it in mind.

I always run as little clear as possible on my electrics anyway, no need to keep the fuel out.

Mel,

I put my 10s Single-Stage Ion-x on a similar flybarless diet as well. I'm using a Helicommand Rigid but have used your tips (Raptor metal grips, mikado swash driver, and brought the servo links in from 19.5 to 15mm for better torque and resolution from my 9252's).

I replaced the landing gear with ones from the Razor (same as the new ones in the Ion-x2 kits I think). I just got the CF landing gear that you have from Esprit and they are ~20g lighter than the Razor's, and look pretty nice as well. I'll probably try them if the Razor gear fails.

I had already added ~20g by doubling up the bottom motor plate (MA124-24). This really stiffened up the Actro motor mount and reduced main gear wear. It also helped stiffen up the Ion frames a bit too.

All up flying weight, less flight batteries, w/Actro 32-3, PowerJazz esc, Align 6A reg w/evolite 2s-2100 pack, stock Ion-x canopy w/decals and painted windscreen (only weighs ~115g, my nicely painted canopy is ~40g heavier), 690 Radix blades is 3.30kg.

With 2x5s Evo25 3700 packs, total flying weight is 4.30kg (9.5 lb). This is only 2-300g more than most 10s Razors I've seen.

With +/-14 deg pitch and 10 deg cyclic this 10s heli is ballistic, and more agile than my 10s Trex600. Even with this extra performance, I'm getting ~10% longer runtimes.

Once I'm 100% happy with my Helicommand Rigid settings I've got a nice new Actro 32-4 max ready to install to try all this on 15s. I might wait until the MA Bandit 111t maingears are out next month to get a better 15s ratio.

Mel, thanks for all your help on all this flybarless stuff.

Best cheers,
TomC

Man, at this rate you guys will probably get your E-Stratus's weight down to, or below, Trex600's!

I have to admit that I'd be a bit worried about using a Logo600 head/shaft, and grips on my Ion-x. Hope it works out ok.

Cheers,
TomC

Sizewise the grips are VERY small compared to the raptor, however, side to side against MA original, they are actually about same size.

Well, head is now mounted, 3550 is my new weight.

Looooooowwwwwer...

Bathmagic, Judging from the picture, Your not running 100T maingear on that picture, right?

And, what tailbox are you using, Open alu tailbox?

Logo 14 shaft + Logo head = No go.

After one hard 3D flight I could with ease push the blade down to the boom, dampners wasnt enough + main shaft is flexing.

Ive put on stratus head & shaft again, gonna pursue other means of making it lighter.

Well, back to the drawing room! Thanks for trying this anyway. It adds a lot to the knowledge base.

cool project!

the logo head might be worth another try....

with 12mm root blades, try a pair of 0.025 to 0.032" alu shims on each side of the blade root (I just make mine from scrap sheet available from onlinemetals, 0.032 work best for most 12mm thick blades I have found) and also some cylindrical dampeners like the K&Bs and the spacers from the mikado 3092 shim set.

afaik the L600 grips are the same as the L14 (so says the destruction manual p/ns), which are slightly tapered.

that taper allows for a lot of blade flapping and whole airframe resonance near blade stall if you just torque the blades down without carefully shimming them inline with the spindle...standard shims don't cut it.

shimmed on the money, it should be pretty hard to flex the blades near the boom at all.

I had shims, as much as I could get in there, thing is you can see the whole mainshaft flexing, alot.

At closer inspection the head actually made contact with the grip and damaged the bearing, so stiffer dampners is a must too.

So I really dont think I would like to run it.
