You may recall our thread about whether or not to build the NIB Hirobo Falcon 505.

Well……we built it and finally flew it today!!

Full details and pictures here.

Enjoy!

Marc

Read the information on your site. This heli would have made a great flight trainer (except for the mechanical shortcomings that you had to overcome).

Nice project! Thanks!

Very cool!

Did you like how it just hangs there?

These were bizarrely stable.

yes...it's TOO stable! It would probably be a great platform for aerial video, but there's no way anyone is going do be doing any 3D with this bird!!

I have to think that this excessive stability is due (at least largely) to the really heavy cast alloy Hiller paddles. The 505's rotor head seems to employ pretty straightforward bell-Hiller mixing, albeit in a slightly different way than became the norm starting in the early 1980's.

I dont think I have ever flown anything quite as stable as this other than my little Blade CX2 in the living room! I was really surprised and did not expect it to fly like that!

Maybe one of these days I'll try an experiment and add tons of weight to my Trex 600N's flybar, just to see if we can duplicate this effect! The aerial video / autonomous drone guys may be interested in this!

Mark,

The paddles on the 505 are heavy, as you pointed out and, if memory serves, are somewhat small in area. There is also some hiller efficiencly lost in the fact that they change pitch (collective pitch) when changing collective on the blades.

What you have is basically a helicopter will almost pure Bell inputs, with a stabilizer bar (very little Hiller input).

Original 707/808 and Hirobo scale ship paddles had quite a bit of area and were very heavy. They also had the sort of "wing tip tank" thing molded onto the end (I suppose for more weight).

Hirobo was big on stability in those days.

I went to your website-I enjoyed your write up. I never tried Rocket City links on one, although that would have been an excellent choice. The Kavan Distribtor was local to us and friendly to us at the time, so we would purchase Kavan links by the 100's and divide them up amongst ourselves. They had a chrome-plated brass ball, as opposed to Rocket City's aluminum ball, which gave a very good service life.

Please continue to write these things up. I am really enjoying reading about them.
