For those of you that are running the 8717's are you running a regulator? I now have the 8717's on three birds, all with the arizona reg. My 600n is acting up in flight. I just loose complete control for a second or two. On the ground the receiver flashes then goes solid Like it resets, but the servos never move while it is on the ground. It seems to be the regulator. so I was thinking about just running straight off of my lipo pack and just stepping down the throttle and gyro. I changed the radio to a 9303 and changed the receiver too. The regulator is all that is left. What are your thoughts on the straight lipo? Pros & cons?

Use high current cabling for power. Even if you're taking servo power direct from the battery, you can still get significant voltage drop through the ground returns.

I run 8717's with VR5203 http://www.heliproz.com/prodinfo.asp?number=154021 for gyro running servos straight from receiver
and I have had no problems at all I run a 2000 mah prolite lipo
I get 5 flights but recharge at 4

Yes the Spektrum Dual Output Regulator VR5203 is one way to do it. I'm planning on the same thing on my new build.

If your 2.4 then the new Spektrum AR7100 or 7100R receivers look to be excellent options.

I just took the reg out of my 600 and absolutley love it!!! no problems and the extra voltage and less stuff in between the battery and the reciever is extra insurrance for me.

What lipo are your guys using? I'm scoping out a Thunderpower 2S 2100 pack but wondering if it's enough capacity. Would 2100 be enough for at least three flights?

With an Arizona reg on that pack I'm getting 3 flights max! Also running 8900 on tail and high speed throttle I'm looking at a bit bigger pack ....maybe a 3200 mah

weekend yet?

I've been using FlightPower Evo-lite 2100's for the 600's and 4340's for the big stuff - 500+ flights on the 600E, 70+ gallons of nitro last year - no problems.

I run the 8717's unregulated - their combined peak current draw is hard on most regulators.

Hello

The 8717 servos are power hogs, your probably safer running 8v and regulating the gyro and throttle servo. Ive had very good luck with this setup.

Anyone here run A123 , 8717's with a spectrum RX ? A123 batts drop volts fast and I know Spectrum RX's do not like that

I dont know how to fly just how to not crash !!!!!

The A123s don't drop until they have used up all their capacity. When I built mine, I tested them at a continuous 3amp draw, and they started at 7.4v for the first 50mah or so, dropped to 6.6v, and stayed steady there for the next 2200mah, at which point they dumped to the 4v range. They hold voltage under load much better than a Lipo or Li-Ion, you just have to measure your flights since you can't load test them. I run them on my gasser and on a couple of giant scale planes, they are awesome packs.

Here's some discharge curves I found on another site of a 10amp continuous discharge, which is a lot higher than your going to pull out of them with your 8717s, it stays constant at 6v until the end, well above the 3v or so Spektrum low reset. The next one is a 15amp continuous discharge, and again, they are well above what you need.

I'm not debating that they are not great packs but they are not recommended for helicopter applications with high load draws such as 8717's running straight off of battery ,Spectrum RX's will fail safe
If you call manufacture they will tell you this . I was planning to switch to A123's until I did some research they are great for planes and many other applications I just do not trust them

OK, like I said, they hold up great under loads, it's right there on the discharge curves. Those are both higher loads than your going to pull with your servos. No matter what Spektrum says, the discharge graphs don't lie. The only difficulty with A123s is that they don't give any warning before they dump, and the slightly higher weight. Other than that, they are more tougher, handle high charge rates and discharge rates better than lipos, and are safer.

My info came from the battery manufacturer not Spectrum so I will trust them over a graph that is all I am saying I,me,myself do not want to take a chance on hurting someone or my heli

Huh? I don't believe there are any batteries available today that will hold their voltage better than A123s M1 cells under load for our application.

Jeff Polisena,

I like the way you run your electrical harnesses near the switch mount area. Clean, tidy and done without a bunch of conduit, tie raps and blinged up clutter.

Jeff, you definitely talked to the wrong guy. The A123's are loafing at these current levels. The only voltage drop is the steep knee at the end of discharge.

I've been running them forever as have many others both on heli's, spektrum, and much more demanding applications. The voltage is pretty much dead flat at 6.3 (as you can see on the graph). Even if you throw 20A at them you won't get them to drop voltage. The GS guys running 7-11 8711's are converting to these packs in droves and have double or triple our current requirements.

Don't know who you spoke with. But he steered you completely wrong. Do little reading and you'll find a hundred other opinions to corroborate both Eury's and my information.
