Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > BLS451 Cyclic Servo - Suitability - query

In the process of having a new HOTCAT built.with Jetcat PHT3

On the cyclic i am using BLS451 servos, a couple of pilots at my club - ( good competent pilots) were saying there has been problems using these servos, they cause glitches and lockouts,

They made the point that on Futaba's web site these servos are racing car servos and are not helicopter servos.

I was wondering if anyone else is using these servos ?

Just wanted to know any info

many thanks

update i found this from another site,

The BLS451 is designed by Futaba for use in Nitro or Electric cars, they are not precise enough for the demands of heli flight.

The only brushless servo we offer at the moment for heli use is the BLS251.

Bugger, @ 77.99 each, why is it dedicated helli shops, are selling these ?

they must be ok , i bought 4 and have got someone to fit them in my new turbine, does this mean i have to rip them out and put in the 9206.or 9252

i am getting a little confused

i am having some people tell me they are ok and they have been flying them around in machines both nitro and turbine,

and you are saying deffinatly unsafe to use in a Helicopter.

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE SOME CLARIFICATION, as i do not want to be flying around with them if they are unsafe.

Matt,
Krysta's note was followed up by this note

We've done a lot of checking, and apparently, one of the tech sheets we received was mis-interpreted. I did a lot of checking and found that the Futaba BLS351 and BLS451 servos can be used in virtually any R/C application, as long as they have proper installation and power delivery.

If a servo glitches in a particular application, the first check should be to replace it and see if it's the servo. If a replacement, known good servo still glitches, then the application must be suspect. In helis, you need to make sure your linkages have zero play and that the power supply is sufficient. Remember, high-torque servos can consume a lot of power, especially digital brushless high-torque servos. If the power supply isn't sufficient, then erratic operation can occur.

Again, the Futaba BLS351 and BLS451 Digital Brushless servos can be used for virtually any hobby application the modeler desires.

We are running about 12 of them in helis. We have not any problems with the servos.

thanks a lot for the information, that has put my mind at rest,
there was a big thread on it and i thought oh poo i have got the wrong servo's.

But this info lays to rest.

My only question is what do they mean by proper installation and power delivery ?

Many thanks again, if you were in the UK i'd buy you a beer!!

Good power suply is a good batery. If you use a voltage regulator, make sure it can delivery at least 7,5A constant.

Make 2 flights and then recharge you batery so you can make an average consume per flight. On an expensive heli, I do not use more than half the battery's capacity.

IMHO , it's always prudent to buy the top of the range , servos for your model , including the redundant battery source , one normally buys the best radio one can get , including the best cells. It's just a question of why go for the untried and unknown even at a price , it's almost tantamount to saying , use it on the tail as well , and not a matched servo to the gyro of which we already know , works. For me , there is too much $$$$$$ at stake , touch wood I've had one medium crash in 35 years , and maybe luck , not servos , but a split ball link at the top of it's circle.

PS I only fly slow scale , so I don't get into too much trouble in the air , as opposed to flying 3D , then I surely would fall flat on my face every fly day.
Dave.
