Your Derby just has really good PR people. The dogs come from the same kennels and travel around the country racing. So while your dogs wern't put down in colorado. They got put down as soon as the got home to Kentucky.

Actually in the Kennel that I was at if the owner no longer wanted the dog the kennel owner (person dog was leased out to) was responsible for the dog. Where I was at ALL of the dogs that this happend to went out to the adoption kennel (I use to work at the Kennel as a helper and my step father owned some dogs). As far as I know we did not have any dogs from KY???

My step father and his partner currently have racing greyhounds and I can assure you that those dogs are treated very well and DO NOT get put down becase they can not run. I do not really care for the whole thing but I do know that the dogs are treated well and every dog they own is always accounted for and respected.

I guess I can only speak for my step father and his partner on their treatment of the dogs - not the whole industry... I would think that the last 5 years that part of my family has been involved in the industry would give me a little bit of credit but it probably does not.

All I can say is belive what you want... I have been around the industry and heard the stories, but I have yet to see the mistreatment and wrong doing that some people make it out to be. I did see one kennel helper hit a dog one night with a dish and he was turned in for it and fired. Maybe it was worse in the past and that is where the bad press has come from or maybe I am blind. Either way I help with adopting dogs out where I can and if I see someone mistreat a dog I will turn their A$$ in... Thats all I can really do

I hear yah!!!. All I can say is come to florida some time if you want to be horrified. I'm sure there are a few good owners but not near as many as bad ones. I feel even if your a good owner though your enabling the bad ones..... food for thought.

I see your points and respect them. I also want to add that if people did not bet on them that would shut the business down pretty quickly as well...

Like I said before I do not really care for the whole thing but all I can really do is help adopt the dogs out and turn people in if I see them mistreat the dog's...

Anyway sorry to take this post off topic... Back to horses

Now watching the Preakness pre-race hype there is some serious change coming to this sport. Permissable racing medications are being investigated. Can there be a drug free racing?
Should they change the surface that they run on? That's only 200 years on dirt tradition.
Owner says Eight Bells stumbled while pulling up. Why did she stumble? Was she pushed beyond her limitations?
I think the statement of "What ever it takes for the good of the horse need to be done" is going to happen!
Go Big Brown!! Preakness win $1,000,000 purse.. Let see a big 3 sweep!
