Living on their feet,it's rare that a hose can come back from one broken leg let alone two.We have a pony that went through this, but she wasn't with us when she healed.
Remember Barbaro?
Once they have a bad leg, they stand on the other, and that screws up the good one. It's downhill after that.Everything snowballs.
Bottom line, owners have always wanted a return on their investments,so they start running them as two year olds.Winning the derby, you're set for life.A top stud gets 150g's per load.Breed him 150-200 times/yr.
The good ones have all heart and run like hell. It's a shame.
Don't worry, there's a new crop of future champs munchin on bluegrass right now

Thanks for the info Bart!!

I always turn on the TV at the wrong time, saw both of these horses get hurt. Saw Dale Sr die, damn. Dale Jr crashes and could have won after not winning in 2 years.

Sad, but thats life I guess.

The look in 8 bells face was so sad.

My cousin is a national champion horse back rider(Allison Howe), or was when she was younger. She was good. Dad is a heart doc, and they lived in Paducah Kentucky. She had a few beautiful horses. And LOTS of land.

I'm not big on horses, but it was always something I kinda wanted to get into. As I'm sure you know, raising horses isn't a cheap thing... Probably makes RC helicopters look like child's play when it comes to hobbies... But who knows, maybe down the line when I'm financially able to afford it I'll do the research and do what's needed to own a couple and be a good owner...

Well,he was sitting on him.The jocks get a % of winnings.Do you really think they don't want a couple hundred G's?I'm not saying it's right, but they literally whip the fur off 'em.

We do Quarter horse barrel racing.
Here's a shot of the Princess and my big boy from this past weekend.
They ran 3rd out of 97,less than 1/10th off the leader!!!! I'm very proud of them
Notice the leg protection we run with.

Horses arn't half as bad as dogs. I used to goto the dog races and its sad, if one of then trips and take a tumble. They will finish the race and then have a 95% chance they will just be put down.(Because medical reasons) So basically I can tolorate horse racing, but not dogs anymore. The last straw was when I saw one dog take a fall and get up with a broken leg and yelp the last 3/4 lap to the finish trying to do his best.

actually, another thing they usually don't tell you is that if a dog doesn't take a podium within its first 3 races, it's destroyed.

And this is the kind of thing thats killing dog racing. I can't figure out why they don't start to selectivly breed a new type of dog that smaller (for adoption purposes) and more dependable. Like a border collie or Aussie Shepard mix. You can throw one of them off the roof and they'll be ok..

I am going to get flamed for this but those horses are so heavily insured that she was worth more dead than trying to get her well.

That's probably correct. Sad to say but to some people, race horses are just a piece of property mean to be used and abused all for money. I'm not against horse racing, but i do think those who are caught knowingly racing a horse that has maybe had an injury that did not have time to properly heal, should be heavily fined or more.

My family adopted a racing grey hound. He was the best dog we've ever owned until we had to put him down because of back problems associated with running.

You quote above in you post is not true here in Colorado. I have been around racing dogs for the past 5 years and I do not know of any dogs here in CO that have been put down because they did not win a race. If they grade off in their maiden races they are adopted out. Over the past 5 years the adoption kennels that I have been involved with and help with are very successful in finding homes for the dogs.

BTW a greyhound is a great dog and is much easier to take care of than most people think. They are very affectionate, good with kids, do not bark, and are kennel trained when you get them. Also the breading policy’s associated with greyhounds are so closely monitored that they very rarely have joint and hip problems that other breeds have - with a greyhound you are always getting a dog that came from two very healthy parents. I have had labs, a husky, ****zus, I also have a rat terrier and I must admit that my 2 racing greys are the best dogs that I have ever had...

The below link is the racing and breed data for one of my dogs that was a AA racer for a little bit. She ran over 150 races. I had to wait a year to get her:

http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?d=b...ear=&birthland=

This link is for my wife’s greyhound that sucked at running (She lost all 18 of her races and is still alive)

http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?d=B...ear=&birthland=

I do not want to get into the PC debate about weather or not its right to race the dogs. IMHO judging from the attendance at the local dog races socity as a whole is not accepting it as they use to so that is the best judge I guess.

I do know that if any of the dogs that I know got hurt or had to be put down I along with the trainer, track personal, kennel help, and the dog owner would all be sad. If you are around them you get attached to them!!

If horse racing is anything like dog racing then I am sure that all of the people who were around that horse on a daily basis are sad as well. Even the owner who may or may not have collected on an insurance policy...

I know that a lot of dog tracks in various parts of the U.S. used to do this... There was a greyhound club in my hometown that saved dogs from tracks and I had quite an extensive talk with them, but this was a few years back. A great many dog tracks have been shut down, largely because of this reason. And yes, I do agree with you that greyhounds are very good dogs. All of the hounds that I met were very sweet dogs and wanted to adopt one myself, however my parents already have 4 rascals to worry about.. Who knows, maybe one day when I have a place of my own and can afford it I'll give one of these dogs a home.
