e-E-Flite Blade CP CX 400-3D > Blade CX2 Blade CX-CX2 Upgrades

I have been looking around the internet and see there are several sites selling supposed upgrades. I'm looking here to see what works best or what to stay away from.
CryoHobby.com claims to have redesigned the drive with hardening the shafts and gears and lengthening the shafts to stop blade slap. Also a new brain set up for 3cell batteries.
Extreme ??? has new ball bearing motors. The second generation supposedly has 25% more power. It seems the extra load would cause the 4 in 1 to burn out.

I have done a little experimenting on my own and found the CX to be very weight sensitive.
On one of my CX1's I installed the new Jet Ranger body, and it looks nice, but has slowed the responsiveness. That's OK for relaxing hovering around.

On my CX2, I completely removed the body, and added some coat hanger wire to the tail. Just enough so the gyro doesn't spaz out! It's lighter than having the body and almost no drag. The heli really came alive! Now I have to be more careful about changing direction as the faster response causes the flybar to hit the bottom blades I think.

Significantly reducing your flybar weights by either cutting it down or putting locking collars on it (or both) is the best performance mod I've come up with. It also stops all rotor clack if you reduce them enough.
Putting a cf tail boom on is pretty nice too, much less weight and it dosen't get flopped around in the wind quite so bad.
I would reccomend alu upper and lower rotor heads as well as the swashplate. Also the motor heat sink seemed to keep things alot happier under there.

I think that's pretty much it for mods that add function or reliability instead of just bling. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input.
I don't have metal swashes but do have the metal top and bottom heads. I have played with the flybar in the past, by just removing the weights and putting the rubber ends back on. It makes the heli kinda squirrelly!
Maybe I'll try shortening it and using wheel collars for weights.

The carbon boom looks like a good move, but cost a lot for what it is.
I essentially did the same thing with the wire, although it's not pretty! I probably will try a homemade version now that I know it does fly better.

Has anyone tried putting a second link on the flybar? I saw it as an upgrade somewhere, and I tried it. The heli was almost uncontrollable, and I broke a landing gear getting back the the floor!
Probably my fault. It seemed a little tight but I flew anyway.

Yeah, the second link on the flybar isn't going to do you any good. I tried it before too just out of curiosity. Didn't end up so well.

If you just take the weights out of the flybar I think you end up with such a drastic difference that it's probably not going to seem worth it. With the locking collars you can adjust and finesse your tailored weight system until you have the ideal compromise between performance and stability. Don't forget to balance the flybar once you have all the weights on. Massive TBE if the thing is out of whack and generally some pretty crappy flight characteristics.

You could probably get just the carbon rod and fab something up for your tail boom. Nobody says it has to be 10mm or have vertical or horizontal stabilizers on it. I guy can get creative and make something really neat! I was going to do this but never got around to it. Might just go for it next windy day.

OK, I shortened the flybar nearly 2" and put the original ends back on.
I tested it on my extra light CX2 without the body and went full speed across the room, then put the brakes on hard. The flybar didn't hit this time but the blade tips did!

So the shorter flybar is good. Bottom blades need to be stiffer. The only ones I have seen for sale don't fit the stock head. Has anyone tried putting something on the bottom of the stock blades to stiffen them up? I was thinking of maybe adding a strip of packing tape or something like that.

I've noticed that the generic/aftermarket blades aren't as stiff as the eflites. I'd stick with those. I have thought about putting a thin piece of balsa on the bottom. However this seems like a lot of work for what's considered in my books to be an "expendable toy" so I've never really gotten around to it. I certianly would like to hear how it turned out. The other thing I was going to try is to stiffen the blades with a piece of carbon rod glued to the underside. That stuff weighs next to nothing and I think just a dab of glue at the root and tip would hold it since the tip flexes up anyways.
Be sure to let me know what you come up with. In fact, I think I might try the carbon rod one today myself. Forgot all about it.

My brother had all the cryodrive option parts on his cx2 and it was great and could fly in about 8 to 10mph winds That is if you are a very good pilot Hope this helps...Gary
