things im not to sure on are timing settings, switchable frequency and active RPM control.

UH-OH , I see the sp in your first sentence now. Okay..
The Hacker outrunners are high pole count motors, if memory serves me right , the A30-10l has 14 poles, so use the highest setting on the timing , and around 22khz on the "switchable frequency ". I would use a 100% straight throttle curve in Idle-up mode with that 16 tooth pinion..
When I first started flying the EP8 I used the A30-10L and 4s1p 3700mah and a 17 tooth pinion , and it did fly good on that set up..
I do suggest using a Castlecreations ESC though , those high pole count motors just don`t run to there fullest RPM`s on the Chinese and cheap ESC`s. There was a very big post on RCgroup about the Hacker high pole count motors and ESC`s that just would not spin the Hacker to its fullest RPM`s.

thanks thats just the reply i was looking for, it will help a lot. I have a spare 17t pinion, would that help also?

I also have another hyperion 80a esc spare that i was thinking of using on the Ex with the scorpion motor, is this a bad idea?

many thanks
Pete

The Scorpion HK3026-XXXX series motors only have 8 poles so the hyperion 80a esc spare will work just fine ..
Yes the 17 tooth pinion will help ; with the 4s1p 3700mah and the 17 tooth and the A30-10L that should put your headspeed right at around 2350-2450RPM`s , perfect for the Sportsman...

Yes , leave the GOV off and use 100% for your idle up ...

Is that an HDX500 canopy?

yes its the FG hdx500 one.
People say it looks funny but with the trex 600 landing gear it suits it well

Yup , batteries are about the most expensive thing about electric helis.....
Of course I always buy the best batteries cause I learned a long time ago , if you buy cheap batteries you always end up having to buy the best ones anyway , so buy the best ones first and they will last...

I have found the evos to be good batteries so far

with all this talk about motors i have decided to jump straight to the scorpion motor, its been ordered and i should have it in a day or two, so will have both helis with scorpion motors, i guess all the setup details you just filled me in on for the esc will be totally different for the new motors.

Yes , the Flightpower EVO batteries are some of the best batteries in the world, they use only ENERLAND of Korea cells for their packs..
I will buy nothing but batteries that have ENERLAND cells.
Poly-Quest batts. are made by ENERLAND , but other batteries that use ENERLAND cells are the Flightpower EVO ; Hyperions ; Tanic ; Poly-RC...
Most of my batts. are the Poly-Quest 25C`s, awsome batteries...

Wow,
got the scorpion motor in and just had a test flight, so much quieter than the hacker and definately much more power, next flight im going to change from the 16t to 17t pinion and see how it feels.
the motor and battery are much cooler now aswell.
looks like a winner all round far as im concerned.
I ran a 5 min flight so should be interesting to see how much charge the battery takes back.

I was able to run that same setup with an 18t but I did have the hardened shafts.

what do the harden shafts do/help?

technically an 18t pinion is exceeding the HS limit on the head by a few hundred RPM. there are two types of main shafts in circulation, the soft carbon steel ones, and the S.S. ones
