I was just messing with the SIM, and as I stretch my self more on Heli flying, I'm noticing a habit from my old fixed wing days, that would save an airplane, but will kill a heli.

Back in the old fixed wing days, the rule of thumb was:
If things start to get out of hand, back off on the throttle, and keep the nose up. At worst, you'll lose air speed, and glide down.

Seems to be a fatal combination with a heli. lol

Drop the throttle, and pull the nose up on a heli, and it's gonna crash.

When I started in heli, I thought my fixed wing experience would be of benefit. And in some ways it is. In FF, flying circuits, it helps me keep orientation. The right left thing is nearly a reflex.
What I wasn't expecting was for some of the habits that would save an airplane, would kill a heli.

Helicopters don't fly, they beat the air into submission.

If vertical, center cyclic, easy cyclic forward and add collective!
If Inverted, Aileron roll, establish level flight, read line above!

Altitude is life in helo's, Learn Autos on the sim...
Use strap on the sim to truly simulate flying with a radio on!
Unless your gonna fly in a office chair, try standing up, I am not kidding, I have met many guys that are use to flying sims sitting down in a chair, with no strap on! NOW I have never seen someone at a field flying in a office chair with the receiver w/o a strap on!

MY two cents

pull-n-pitch means the strap that goes around your neck and clips to the transmitter

That would be the thing the goes around your neck to hold the radio..But it may mean something different for you

I'm not too sure about the STRAP ON either. I fly with and without the strap and can't see any difference. Sometimes it makes the radio more comfortable to hold if flying all day, but I've never seen where it made any difference in my control. It might be because I have a hand big enough to palm a basketball.

As for getting out of trouble, which I seem to do a lot off, if I'm more than a foot or so off the ground, I give it power, get altitude and try saving it. If I'm close to the ground, pull a dumb thumb and get too far out of position, I try to kill just enough power so it will come down lightly. Usually if I pour power to it when close to the ground, it just goes on its side and hits the blade but when I already have a little height I can get it corrected with power and a quick corrective move.

I have no trouble letting literally anyone take a few minutes of sticktime on my Raptor 30. What I do is teach without the use of a buddy-box and find it very easy and safe to do so. What I can't figure out is although so many experienced heli pilots claim to want to help beginners, locally never, I repeat never has any of those experienced heli pilots showed an iota of interest in how I can do this.

I also teach people to fly airplanes and found that knowing how to fly either airplane or heli first helps in learning to fly both. I keep hearing about some fixed wing habits has to be unlearned to fly helis. In my experience, that has never been the case.

There are a great number of reflexes that you build flying fixed wing that DO carry over to the heli. Not the least of which is learning orientation while in FF.

But some of the things that you use to save a fixed wing in a bad situation, will splatter a heli. That's all I was sayin'.

I'm not disagreeing with you or anyone else at all. I was just saying that in my personal experiences teaching people, those I teach never have that problem. I attribute that to my teaching method, unlike that of not having a hands-on heli instructor.

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought it said "Bad Hobbits", in which case the strap-on might make some sense.

(BTW "habits" has only one "b".

Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

Now, I am not too sure what you guys are strapping on but I was in the R/C mode thing, Not the making a porno movie thing....

Ten Friggin Points for making me laugh at something "I" wrote that got misconstrued by the demented sick R/C Pilots on RR......LOL!

Bad Habits

Back on topic. I actually learned helis and planks pretty much at the same time.So i usually don't have any crossover problems. My bad habit is more like, i've been inverted for a few and then when i get upright i'm all screwed-up.
