Is this a common thing, I have read about this in the forums, but it is few and few between?

How can I prevent this? Is there a reason for it?

Thanks

Always charge as recommended by the battery manufacturer.

Is there a reason for it?
- Charge with the wrong charger type. (You must use a charger designed to charge Li-Po and if your charger is muli-purpose it must be set to charge Li-Po.}
- Overcharging. (Follow the manufacture recommendation. If not specified, 1C is safe.}
- Not balancing. (Always use a balancer.}

Following instructions and always watching your battery for any sign of "puffing" should allow safe charging.

The most common cause is charging at the wrong voltage or amp rating for the battery. Other things like crashes can effect batteries as well.

It is not near as common now as it was a few years ago due to better batteries and chargers.

Treat Li-Po's with respect, pay attention to the details and instructions when using and charging and you should be fine.

Just remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would fall off.

Things to concider on the charger

1. Charging with the wrong setting on the charger (ie: NiCD, NiMH, PB)
2. Charging at a higher rate than its 1c rating
3. Over charging (charger doesn't have peak detection)
4. Charging a damaged cell

On the plane or heli

1. over discharging
2. crashing

Usually lipos don't abruptly BURST like you are describing. They will puff up before that happens. When it does this, usually the battery is on the way out. The only lipo fire i have ever seen was from using the wrong charging setting.

Always double check your charging settings and charge in a safe place

Thanks, that will help me sleep tonight.

I have heard of people charging them in metal boxes, is that going over the top, or a prudent safety step?

If your going to go that route then get yourself one of those Lipo Sacks.

So far I have never had a Lipo accident.

I have even cut them open trying to start a fire and cant get them to burn.

Be careful.

practically ALL lipo fire incidents can definitely be traced to operator error.

It's not nearly as common as as people have finally realized a balancer or balance charger is the way to go. 4 years a ago "everyone" (including famous garage burners) felt it wasn't necessary or you could use it every now and then....some regret that deeply.

In 2004/2205 it was common not to use a balancer, luckily it's not anymore.

I've had one two that caught on fire. The first was one that had a puffed cell. It was sitting on my bench in the garage and it tossed it toward the trash can. I went over the can, hit the ground and went up a a blaze of glory. The second was one I didn't strap down, and didn't put the canopy on because I was going to just make one quick flite out and back to check something. When I sat the heli down, it was a little too hard and the battery bounced up into the spinning blade. $40 blade and $80 battery up in a puff of smoke all because of dumb laziness. Needless to say, I don't even power one up anymore without the battery strapped down.

Also, 'try' NOT to charge your Lipo's while they are in or attached to your aircraft. Sooner or later it will bite you. Better to be safe then sorry and pull them out, you can also monitor there temps better this way.
