e-Mikado Logo 400 500 600 > Taking 500 Plunge Today. What Do I Need?

Hi All,

I'm thinking about taking the Logo 500 3D plunge today. I will be replacing my Swift 16 that has 400 flights on it. It's been a good heli, but it just doesn't fly on a par with my 600s. I've heard the 500 3D might not only meet, but beat the performance of my 600s.

Here's what I have:

- Century 600+ motor (1100kV)
- Jazz 80-6-18
- 3X DS821 servos
- JR 770 3D w 8900G
- WR 5.4V step down
- WR Hercules 6V 5A BEC
- 3X TP 5000 batteries
- SAB 550 blades
- K&B tail blades

My questions are:
- What do I need to order to get my 500 3D going?
- Do I need a metal motor mount?
- Do I need a pinion? Which one?
- What main gear?
- Do I need a counter bearing?
- What should I put in a crash kit?

Thanks much!
LJS

I cannot comment on the logo or its flight characteristics, but I did notice that among all your top-notch gear your putting in these...

3X DS821 servos

This is a mistake, do a search on here regarding these servos. They are weak and should not be used in a heli.

Hi S76 Mech,

Yeah, I was thinking about replacing them with 9452s unless someone has a better suggestion. Good catch.

Thanks,
LJS

I did not see what gyro and tail servo you were using but I assume it is a GY401 and 9254 thus the need for the stepdowm. That combo will work great in the Logo unless you are a full force 3D pilot. Some peole have said it does not hols well whil doing fast backwards flight.

Do I need a metal motor mount?

With that motor, definitely. I would also add a Trew 5mm main shaft collar righ up next to the motor to prvent any vertical movement on the shaft. BTW they should come in the kits by now for free.

Do I need a pinion? Which one?

Depends on whether you go with the .7 mod gears (recommended with that motor) or the .5 mod gears. Some have never had problems with the .5 mod gears and some have. I say why risk it?

Do I need a counter bearing?
Not unless you are running some SERIOUS power AND you have an outrunner. They are mostly for 10s and above setups for the Logo 600.

What should I put in a crash kit?

Main blades, tail boom, landing gear, FRAMES, hardened main shaft, hardened tail shaft, and those stupind little double ball links that I seem to break every time.

I would also invest in some Rototech 560mm main blades. With that setup you have now, the 9452 servos, and the RT blades, it will scorch! V-Bar is the next in the evolution but it costs a grip Hope this helps.....Ron

Kind of a small thing, but I see FRAMES in the crash kit. The Frames are very crash worthy except for the connection to the landing gear. A tip I got which has help me already is to use nylon screws to hold the landing gear on...then they break not the nut holder on the Frame!

M3X20 NYLON SCREWS, 10 at http://www.hobby-lobby.com/ Just cut to length.

Hi Tday,

Thanks for the tip on the nylon screws. I was just ordering from Esprit this morning, but they were out of stock on the nylon screws. I'll order them from HobbyLobby.

Thanks again,
Larry

I have had two crashes with the new Logos and twice the frames had to be replaced. If the LG tab breaks, you are stuck. I will be using the nylon screws also from now on....Ron

Yes, they *do* work and that's a really good thing. One other minor point, on my one crash so far (---it's fairly new) a grip broke, but the beefy spindle was perfectly fine while the main shaft was about 45 degrees at the main bearing. Anyway, I now have a spare grip and I'm not sure if I really want a hardened main shaft as part of the crash replacements given how the frame was perfectly fine with bending a softer one. Maybe some more experienced guys can comment.

Servos....you DEFINITELY should go with a nice set of Futaba 9451/9452's...DO NOT go with the 821's

as for an ESC..the Jazz 80 is a GREAT setup but not really necessary...I have been using the stock trex 600 align 75a esc for a few hundred flights now on my logos and they work great...especially for the price there really is no need for a governed setup on 6s in my opinion..but that's just my opinion..

as for the other questions ..a metal motor mount comes with the 500 kits these days as does the .7mod gearing...so don't worry about those...as for the rest if the setup you have there it looks GREAT!

you'll be very happy with it ...

BTW...the counter bearing setup is really ONLY for 10s machines like the logo 600's...I'm not sure it really does anything on those machines either but I do use them on my logo 600 vbar helis just in case..I wouldn't worry one bit about that though...

you will find that the logo 500 is a VERY nice machine and will outfly any trex 600 out there...

On the 600 series it holds the motor shaft and will ensure to keep pinion perfectly aligned, this is not required on the 500 and as well for most part not on the 600 either, only needed for motors with softer more flexible shafts.

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

How do you determine if your motor has a "softer shaft"? Thanks for the info
