I have read and understand all the TSA regulations. I'm just curious if anyone has actually carried their heli with its lipos on a flight recently. I plan on doing so in the next week. I will have someone taking me to the airport who will wait to make sure I get through security. If I have any problems I will just make the hand off to my buddy and go without. Shouldn't be that big a deal, should it?

Now to make it fly like it does in my dreams!

lipo and airlines

I was traveling with my blade cp-pro in my checked luggage, never was it an issue ever, I know that you wont be able to carry it on though, the blades would be considered weapons as well your not allowed tools or anything of the like on the airline.

They don't care about the blades. The tools, yes, you need to check them.

I have carried my T-Rex 450 in the Align case on many flights from Tampa to the west coast, with various connections in many airports. I have never been denied, and only asked to open tha case twice. The only sticky point is the size of the Align case. It's a little long, and will hog up more space in the overhead. So, don't be the last one on board.

lmao

if you hover inside the plane while its flying your hovering at 300+ mph

there is some food for thought, and unless busted on discovery channel the jet would be one t-rex lighter, or not

Heh.. true true. Except the one t-rex lighter bit. The air in the cabin would support the weight of the heli.

Mythbusters took that one on using birds (and even tried to use an RC heli, but couldn't manage to hover it without crashing inside the container), and confirmed that the sealed container weighed the same with the birds at rest or in flight.

yup, saw that one!!! had 5 blade rotor head, jamie was pissed since it was his heli and he let one of the crew fly it.

LOL only way it would lighten up is in a 0g dive

but back to the subject, I once brought a few z-scale train sets back as carry on from Germany, never thought they would let a heli on,

I think the rex will come to az with me , can fly while the wife goes to some dull wedding!!!!!! hmmm fly in church?? could be interesting, get some aerial pics of the ceromony

Another tip: when going through security, act natural, and don't volunteer info that they don't ask for. Many times the TSA guys would get curious and chatty...I don't know if they were truely interested in the helicopter, or using some psych process on me to determine my intentions. Maybe a bit of both.

Be cordial, and cooperative. Don't go on about BLADES and BATTERIES and RC stuff. If they ask questions, be positive and honest.

Just in case anyone is interested, I just got back from my trip and all went well. I took my Trex case through security and they didn't even pop it open. I would still only take the one lipo installed in the "device" and the two spares though, if I were doing it again tomorrow.

Now to make it fly like it does in my dreams!

Guys I have traveled with helis of all types many times. Remember it is always a "toy helicopter". The batteries are just that, batteries. All of the rest will go smooth. I agree, offer only information they ask for and you will likely never have issues. I just got back from San Diego. No issues traveling with a Vibe 50, 90, the Raves, and several battery packs and chargers for the electrics. The trip there the guys at TSA got curious about the battery packs, but another guy there knew what they were and neutralized the curiosity. Turned out he flew planes and used the same packs in his electric planes. They were testing them with the sniffer and he walked up and said "Those are RC packs, they are ok". On the trip back they never even asked what they were. I think at this point most of the people at TSA have seen an RC heli, car, or airplane. It’s not THAT rare. Just be nice, cool, and answer questions when asked and all will be fine.

PS, pack the stuff well, or suffer the consequences!

Build it, fly it, crash it. Repeat as often as needed.

Here's a horrible thought. . . what about if they should burst into flames in the baggage hold or overhead locker?
I know some mobile phones and laptop pc's have them in..but they are not subject to the stress we put them under. Still..always a first time!

When it comes to TSA, you have to keep that thought to yourself. It is indeed valid, but if you bring that up, there went all of your packs. And they really don't care how much they cost. Trust me, I know!

The batteries are HAZMAT. I know it sounds silly but if you go by the book they would have to be packaged acording to the "technical instructions for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air" manual. I geuss the TSA employees don't know what they are.

They are HazMat, however if you read the IATA regs and the HMR, you will find that most packs the size we use are excepted quantities, ie, less than 25g equivalent lithium content.

They know exactly what they are and has been pointed out they do not fall outside their guidlines for lithium content, this stuff is not THAT rare. However it is best to keep the risks to yourself when dealing with TSA. If we could not carry these packs, a spare laptop pack would not be allowed either.
