Is anyone running their YS91SR on Magnum 30% fuel? I would like to know what experience you have had, good or bad.

I was told to switch to Coolpower or shim the head.

Thanks,
Todd

Great so far, no issues whatsoever. Not sure why someone would suggest the switch to CP. Can you elaborate?

I never finish anythi

I am having some vibration issues in my Synergy due to an out of round starting coupler.....but during my troubleshooting, I was told by a very knowledgable national level pilot that this engine does not like Magnum and runs much better on CP. Something about the compression ratio and timing.

I have not had my YS91SR very long. I'm only on tank number six, and haven't got the chance to get it completely dialed in yet. I now have the needle set to the operating settings in the manual, and it's running ok, maybe still a little rough. It haven't got a new stater coupling yet, so it's hard to tell exactly how the engine is performing until I eliminate that source of vibes. Hopefully tomorrow I will receive new part.

I was just wandering about the fuel, and how many others are or are not using Magnum with this engine. I've used Magnum for years with OS50's and YS91ST's.

Thanks,
Todd

Have a Ys91sr in my R90 3D, running Magnum 30% heli, flew a gallon this past weekend, no problems, making great power.

My buddy also runs the same setup with no problems.

What problems are you having?

I would definitely get your vibration issue(s) worked out first. I’m too am running the YS SR with the Magnum and it is very consistent and produces very good power. (yes I am bias)

I ended up getting rid of the troublesome starter coupling and replacing it with an EVO 90 part. That immediately removed the runout issue.

I have flown again and it seems to be running ok, maybe not fully broken in yet.

The tail still looks "busy" like the motors not quite right yet.

Time will tell if I can get it tuned perfectly.

I also had problems with Magnum but mine was eating the plugs. About every gal and 1/2 it would be distorted. I shimmed and did all of the other stuff but got tired of it went back to CP 30% and all is good.

I'm running Magnum 30% in my YS SR, it runs great. I've been running Magnum for about 6 years now. The prices Buzz at Magnum will give you, on a big order and club discount, you can't beat it. Buzz is an awesome guy to deal with too. I'm not a rep either, I pay for my fuel!

I'm running the standard head shimming in the YS SR too. If you are eating glow plugs up with any fuel, you probably need to do some shimming of your head. Remember, we are all at different atmospheric pressures, humidity, and temperatures, so we will all have different experiences with the same equipment.

Maybe I did not make myself clear I did shim the head. The plugs were all twisted up inside. It was really bad on my Trex 600's so all my point was that I got tired of the plugs and the smoke so I went back to cp and have not had the same problems. I just recently also tried the Power Master fuel and really liked it also. Not sure if I will burn CP or Power Master in the future.

Yup the SR will do that if it's running rich. It should all go away after the motor is well run in and you lean out the motor. The other day I was helping a friend with his SR and the tail was kicking and the motor didn't sound good on climbout. The top was too lean and the mid was too rich. He also had very thin gyro tape on the 611 sensor and once we used the stock futaba gyro tape the tail was perfectly calm in his N9.

Tail

Yes I noticed that too. I have the GY611 and the YS SR 91. The tail kind of just bobs around a bit, even in a hover, by about 2 inches or 3 inches? Kind of just hunts around. It seems to be getting better as the engine breaks in.

I guess you are supposed to tune the hover lean until it gets too lean, then just richen it up a bit. Much harder to tune than the high end, where you just floor it and lean it out till you get a smooth climbout.

Charles,
Excellent suggestion - I am also using some stiff 3M mounting tape for my gyro. I just bought some Zeal tape - I'm going to try that. (the problem with the stock futaba tape is that it needs to be checked often because it will completely come apart in time and your gyro will fall off!)

I flew again last night and now at least my vibrations are better - no more fuel sloshing or foaming in the tank - it looks pretty calm. I think I am getting closer to an ideal running machine. Still have to break in the engine more and do some fine tuning....

Thanks,
Todd
