Finally! Someone to break the ice. Well said by 'The Wasp.' I have the Swift-16 and it rocks even with a crappy battery. Small helis is just a marketing strategy to make you more broke than what you already are when you got into this hobby in the first place. They make an excellent paper weight and looks good for display purposes only. To me, waste of time. You will benefit more from a good sim at half the price. You can't fly anything bigger inside your house did you say... Why not? Oh yes it isn't safe. Well neither is a small heli. Really now, how many of us keep around a small heli anyway. We get rid of it on the first oportunity while the rest of us scratch our heads because you realize you put to much money into it already to get rid of it now. Tell me this aint true guys! Why setup the next guy for the fall? Please come up with something else other than money issues because if we all took this long to get into the hobby, whats a couple more months of waiting until you do have the funds. Not a bad idea don't you think. Anyway, don't hate guys.... Just my opinion.

SkyWarp why try to scare off the new guys that are trying to get into this hobby!

You are horribly mistaken about smaller helis, they fly great but they require a decent pilot. Sure big helis are better at some things but they DO NOT fly better, they fly different. They are big and slow, and require a lot of space. But given that space they are a blast to fly. What about the guy who wants to fly after work in his back yard or in his garage at 2am? Goo luck trying that with a 600 class heli. Well someone flying a 300 (24" rotor span) sized heli will never run out of places to fly! Just a little while ago I was practicing in the basement in an area maybe 10x12ft and I had a great time. And even better is that fact that I have a gym to fly in during the week. It is a nice big space for my small heli and it is never windy or raining or bad in any way. What a wonderful way to spend an hour Monday morning.

Oh and why we are talking money ... more than 2/3s of the money I have invested in this hobby can be used for any heli, even a Swift16. The radio, gyro, charger and even the batteries can all be used on almost any heli I choose. That just leaves about $170 in chassis, motor, esc and servos that might not transfer over to a bigger heli. Knowing that most 500-600 class helis have a minimum $500 chassis cost, how am I wasting money exactly?

I currently have a 50 but previously owned a Swift for a short period of time and no doubt it was a nice piece of machinery. However, I have no beef with the smaller guys either. I love to fly helis plain and simple regardless of size.

hey SKYWARP....what helis besides the swift have you owned????

while I respect your opinion...I have to really disagree with some of your ideas.......while more stable and a little easier to fly..I cant see a big electric being a good starter heli......whats the first thing a newbie does......CRASH...parts and batteries....$$$$$$$......some of the batteries for a bigger electric...cost more than a good starter heli...and blades too...my advice is learn on something cheap and easy to fix....when you can hover in all orientations without fear of crashing...then consider upgrading

Just the Swift. After reviewing the forums, everyone emplying that size offers more stability but yet it appeared that everyone is not acknowledging and still insist on going micro. I based my decision on what majority of the people recommended. So if my perseption is off, then most of everyone is off. If you research the price on parts, it's not that much more than your high end micro. Trust me, I did my homework. With all that aside, 'the bigger in size logic' was accurate to the last letter. I couldn't agree more and thats why I'm thowing it out there. I don't have lots of money either and this is the route I took and I'm still in the hobby while most of your newbies would of already given up from the frustration of the smaller helis.

i would have to guess, the most popular heli in the world(not my choice)is the t-rex 450...there must be a reason for this

and I dont see how you can make the statement that all small helis are a waste of time and money...when you have 0 experience with ANY of them........I can fly my MINI TITAN,which can do anything a larger heli can do,in areas that you could not fly a large heli in...my point is simply...there are pros and cons to both sides and not all small helis are a waste of time....there is a reason the 450 size market is exploding..(t-rex,mini,beam,bandit,beltcp,cypher,tp,gazzaur,skytek,among others)somebody is buying all these helis...you may want to check it out..you could be missing out

True, true... but I'll never go backwards. Bigger is the only way to go. The only good reason they are so popular is the price and nothing more.

Zman,
Yes! I would certainly fly any size, but I'll never buy a small one

sorry to hear you have such a closed mind...but to each his own..thats what AMERICA is all about........but I'm telling you..go fly a well set up MINI TITAN or REX and tell me its not a blast...you have a very distorted view of small helis.....there are some that suck...but there are plenty that ROCK

Quote

....I'd have to disagree for 2 reasons...1 performance....until you fly one you really cant comment and 2 the REX is one of the MOST expensive 450's there is,yet still popular...explain that??

alan szabo jr,danny szabo, bobby watts, jason krause, bert kammerer, nick maxwell, kyle stacy..ect...all world class pilots that can fly ANY heli they want...and along with 90 size nitro they ALL fly 450 size elec REGULARLY....why is that?????

I also would get the sim first. I spent 30 hours on the sim before I ever flew and it has made a huge difference. I have been flying since last September and have only had 3 minor crashes and attribute to the time spent on the sim. First purchase, I would look at getting at least a 7 channel radio, so if you eventually go Nitro or get more intricate electronics, you will be ready for it. You can get a good deal on used Spektrum 7's on runryder and also good deals on a whole package on runryder that will provide everything you need and a better bird than the Eflite. I personally started with a Venture 50, then a Hawk 30, and eventually a 450 electric. If I had to do it again, I would of probably went with the 450 first. It is much cheaper to set up and repair and once set up properly, seems to require less maintanence. Plus, I actually like flying it a little more than the others!!! This hobby is addicting, I purchased a RJX Extreme and Align 600n super pro that are currently being built. Be prepared to spend money!!!!!

Flying a smaller heli is not taking a step back. In fact in some instances I would consider it a step foreward. You learn to drive the big beater and then graduate to the fast ferrari right? You guys can fly your big slow and easy heli's all you want. Go ahead bash the little guys. Some of us prefer some speed and agility to our machines. If big slow and easy is your idea of a superior heli that's great and all the power to you but that dosen't mean you can rip on other peoples machines. It's like comparing a cube van to a sports car. Each has thier place and some people prefer one to the other. But when Mr. Cube van comes up and says he has a superior machine while ripping on the sports cars............ well.......... that dosen't make him sound very intelligent.

PS. Might want to hide this post from the wife. I wouldn't imagine she'd be happy to find out the hubby prefers big slow and easy.

with 2 ears and 1 mouth you should listen twice as much as you talk

Your last comment was funny Demon!!! I agree, the 450/500 size electrics if set up properly are far more agile and have a far better power to weight ratio!!! My buddy has recently started going seriously into electrics and they are killer!!! I prefer the sound and smell of Nitro's, but realize a tricked out electric will smoke a tricked out nitro but with the trade off of shorter flight times. I will eventually get a big electric when the time is right and I can fly much better than I can now. I love my 450 electric though!!

Hay guys,
I have nothing against eletrics they are not for me.It was easyer for
me to fly the nitro helis than electric, esp. when I am flying out side,it was more stable in the wind and power if I needed it.The 450
T-rex seemed to zippy and hard to control when you are trying to learn for your frist time,so for me the 450 T-rex was a bad choice.

Zaaaguy72,
In other worlds your using the small helis for crash tests.. LoL. Not a bad idea though. However,I don't agree with the small ones being easier to repair simply because the larger models don't require tweezers or a microscope. Ok Ok.. I'm exaggerating a little, but close enough.

Sorry Fenderstrat. Just my opinion.

Another thing
Don’t get worked up too much ok peoples. Just giving ‘FireParamedic’ a different perspective. I realize there is allot of you who own and love their Chiwawas but I would personally stick with my Pitbull. And.. may I add, that I don't need to own a chiwawa to know that a pitbull will eat it for lunch.

I guess you could say that, but I think of it as I would rather pay 50.00 to fix for a bad crash while I am learning than 300.00!!! The Nitros are easier to fly though!!

Also the coast of some of those small heli kit coast almost the same
as some nitro.I know the 450 T-rex coast as much as my 30 raptor. So
every body has there own answer ,wright or wrong.Buy a heli and go
from there, they are all fun to fly ,thats why we do this.
