Beginners Corner > Are nitro Helis hard to keep clean?

I made the switch from a Trex 450 to a Raptor 50. They do get greasy but it's not bad. I don't like all the support equipment that a nitro needs. But looking at the tank and knowing how much longer you can fly is great.

I don't mind having to clean it afterward either. I think helis 24/7 so a little more time with my baby is fine with me.

Plus, while you clean it, you can check it over for anything out of the ordinary.
+1

The helicopter is a machine trying to commit suicide, our job is convincing her to fly...

The more I read the more undecided I get. Just about the time I think I'm going to switch to a nitro bird someone comes along and makes me think twice. I would like to fly it at home without pissing off the neighbors. That said, I live on 7 acres, so it's not like I'm right on top of them... Back and forth... back and forth....

Get a Nitro and don't look back. You won't regret it!!!

You can always join a club and go hang out with like minded people. Flying alone is very boring.....

Nitro is the way 2 go

All the plusses mentioned as well as you wipe it down and it makes you pay more attention to any faults or problems compared to elect which just gets unplugged and shelved.

Also it's awesome having the same power 1min into the flight and 7 min into the flight unlike batt.

A gasser would be even better..... but tooooooo expensive.

Ok why are you worryin about bothering them for? nitro helis are NOT that loud. Get one you will love it if you dont then sell the engine and convert it to electric power.

I'll have to sell off a plane or two to fund a larger heli, so I have a little time to decide.

Thanks for all of your opinions.

I love my nitro birds and electrics both for different reasons. but to be honest the main thing I dont like is the nasty cleanup of the nitros.

I find the oil is easier to clean off than the lipo fire residue.

If it's gonna happen it'll happen up there!

I too agree whith the others, Nitro is the way to go. It isn't that bad if you use ISO alchol and q-tips. The only drawback that apears to be on the way is the availability of Nitro and the cost is going up. But I would not trade my RAPTOR 50V2 for anything.

Just because something is easier it doesn’t necessarily mean its better. Don’t let anyone fool you, there really isn’t a better choice. You have to weigh the pros and cons of both and determine which is better for YOU

I flew the rex 450 a ton last year, now I own the Evo 50, point of the story , the rex is on the shelf..the Nitro is a ton more stable!

I use simpl green to wipe it down after every day of flying , takes a couple minutes!I fuel and fly..not charge.fly go home charge again..

That's not really a true comparison. It's more stable because of it's size not because it's nitro. Toss an electric motor in that EVO and it will be just as stable.

A Trex 600 electric is a fantastic bird, when setup correctly during the build. Adjust all linkages to a proven level tail boom (use the proper tools to adjust all like linkages EXACTLY the same), making sure to set up for proper negative, positive pitch DURING THE BUILD...so you will have very little in the way of setup after the build. Make sure the "CG" is PERFECT! This will pay dividends in the way she responds in the air.

A Trex 600 Nitro is a wonderful bird! Everything I said about the electric version applies here, as well.

The only difference I have personally seen...the Nitro version can out perform the electric version in extreme 3D flying...just ask Alan Szabo (sp?).

It all comes down to each individual pilot, as to how he decides to spend his hard earned dollars. YOU WILL NOT HAVE MADE A "BAD" CHOICE NO MATTER WHAT DIRECTION YOU TRAVEL!!!

IMHO only, go Align...go 50 sized Trex (for what you want to do)...decide electric versus glow...build...GO FLY!!!

Do not forget that building is a good portion of the fun. Take your time and really understand why you are doing what you are doing during the build. Really learn your bird! Do not hesitate to use internet resources for help, such as you have done with this site. It is a gold mine of knowledge!!!

For me, I choose a 90 size because I do not mind the repair cost...BUT...BUT...BUT...that is just me. I do not suggest you do so unless you do not mind the higher repair cost.

Lastly...consider investing in a simulator like Phoenix (does not have to be this one)...Join a local flying club...hook up with an instructor...buddy box your investment...work the buddy box and sim hard...have fun!

No matter what, I envy you because you are about to buy and build a wonderful machine.

Have a great day!

They can get very slimey, depending on how you are flying.

I have been working on backwards, inverted for a while now with, amongst other things, a Knight 3D.

After a few flights, the side frames look as though I dipped them in motor oil.

I do not find this to be discouraging, I just clean it up and, as many have stated, check all of the hardware, links etc. while cleaning.

Bigger machines are a blast to fly.

i'm usually the only electric flying where i fly. around here it's so dry and dusty my heli is covered in grit every time i fly. knowing what sand and grit do to working parts i clean the entire bird at the end of each day. while i'm cleaning the dirt out of my head parts with a q-tip at the end of the day i always wish i was wiping off the oil from a vibe 90 machine. i can always dream

fly it like you stole it

If you're a hoverer and forward flight guy with the occasional aerobatic moves(loops, rolls) you're heli won't get too dirty. Start throwing in 3D with backwards inverted, piro flips, tail slides ect, the entire muffler side of the heli will be dripping after a few flight, entire tail boom covered as well as canopy and about 1/4 or so of the opposite side of the frames will be oily as well. You can clean pretty quickly with rubbing alcohol and a rag. A rough clean up can take about 10 mins or less while a more thorough cleaning can take a little while if you wanna get in the nooks and crannys.

Dirty filthy,messy nasty nitro birds

The nitro mess is not nearly as hard to clean up as the soot and charcoal from a flight pack fire!
I look at clean-up as a preflight inspection, Many times I've found problems before they could bite me.
