Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Hawk pro with a 50 OS hyper

I converted one of my hawk pros to a 50 with a 0S 50 hyper. Has anyone done this before as i am wondering about the pitch curve and throttle curve as far as how to set it up. It is still a hawk pro(same airframe) just new engine and engine mount and slightly modified cooling shroud.

yes, do a search on the Century page and you will find many posts on it,,

I hope you are using the 14t drive pinion (on the counter shaft), that's pretty much a must for a 50 size engine..

It's been done but with alot of caution from other members. For sure you will have a pocket rocket to contend with. And as Jim mentioned, you'll need to change out the gear.

whats the reasoning to changing the gear?? I have flown it and it has loads of jam and is a rocket ship just minor flight control trimming and its good to go.

well the smaller OS 32 and 37 engines rev about 1000 RPMs higher than the OS 50 engine does, so if you run the 13t pinion with the 50 you will be over revving the 50 about 1000 RPMs,,

another thing, you should not be running a Head Speed much more than 1800 on the stock Hawk without Thrust Bearings with Wood Blades..

yeah that makes sense. But i have the 50 pulling 12 degrees pitch at approx 1700 RPM and its just past 1/2 throttle on the carb and there is no. So basically it's like i am de rating the engine slightly. I dont use this heli for 3D. More scale like flying and slinging. ALthough changing the gear makes sense i think i will be ok with the stock gear? But it is a rocket ship i flew her tonight and its a whole new animal compared to my other hawk pro with os 37...

(ES is Engine Speed)

with stock gearing,,

a HS of 1639= ES 16,000

a HS of 1741= ES 17,000

heres a little comparison for the OS50 and the OS37

OS50
Output: 1.9ps/17,000 RPM
Practical RPM Range: 2,000-20,000 RPM
Displacement: 0.499 cid (8.0cc)
Bore: 0.866in. (21.99mm)
Stroke: 0.847in. (21.51mm)
Weight: 14.33oz (405.4g)

OS37
Output: 1.4 ps @ 18,000 RPM
Practical RPM range: 2000-21,000
Displacement: 0.37 cu in (6.07cc)
Bore: 0.806 in (20.5mm)
Stroke: 0.725 in (18.4mm)
Weight: 10.3oz (293g)

weight difference is 112.4 grams
power difference .5 ps

IMO what you gain in power you lose in weight
and you burn more fuel($$)and the 50 costs more $$
You would be better of spending your money on a good pipe for the OS37

my 2 cents

I agree. The 50 has way less drop than the 37 at my home base of 4500 ft. My bro flys the align 600 with it and it stomps my little hawk. But i am a better pilot! ahahhahah

SuperSixTwo is a Very nice guy. Helped me out with the manual I was lacking. I have a question for the superior pilot!

Can you use any other fan on the PRO Hawk with the 37 on it. I have broke two fans on the ro hawk due to my ignorance. Wondering if I have to order the $44 aluminum fan from century or is there a cheaper alternative?

thanks again SuperSixTwo, that manual has come in handy to say the least! Steve

I would sincerely recommend a governor to tame that engine down. Not sure what type of flying you do but it will be impossible to set up throttle, pitch and mixes in a way you will have constant rpm through manouevers and not overrev badly when unloading. You might spin your engine to oblivion on a hard over rev.

Steve,
Thanks for the kind words. Always glad to help out a fellow pilot if i can.
As for your fan, How de heck did you break it? Overspeed? Start shaft slip out?
I happen to have both types. I didnt care much for the aluminum fan, it seemed to be a pain in the rear for easy stuff like taking it off the motor. Did cool real well and was cool to loose some parts (start shaft) to clean it up a bit.
As for cheaper ones, I dunno. Anything can be done, but i have yet to try any. With the clutch, fan/starter arrangement, your gonna have to just look at other kits.
I have a stock fan if you want it. pm me your addy and i will ship it out.
If you do buy the al fan dont forget to get the start stick or make sure you can turn you old one around!

IMHO, the MultiGov works very well on my Ravens. Easy to setup and you could even go on line (aerospire.com) and there's a section there that has mostly all the answers you need about the unit.
