Quickest and easiest way to never let that happen again.

Go through your entire starting routine. Right up until your going to blip the starter. But leave the glow ignitor off for the first blip. You'll immediately know if your at low throttle or not. Even the slightest raise in throttle position will change the exhaust tone.

Sorry to hear about your luck. At least your both in one piece.

Don't beat yourself up too bad over it. I'll bet you won't forget it again.. I think 90% of the flyers out there have probably done it before. One suggestion of starting in throttle hold is a good one. I personally have a routine of always making sure that all of my switches are "back" before I even turn on my TX, and then again before I pull the cord on my gasser. Not good to have a hot start with the gas machine....

Everyone does it at least once.
I now obsess about the "all switches up/back and throttle to bottom" mantra

did it at the field couple of weeks ago...came in on a REALLY HIGH auto (which i love doing) and it cut off on me right when i landed...was really enjoying myself so i ran over to the heli with on starter and ign. and wow..full power...hit the thottle hold just in time and saved my clutch liner.....then backed off...looked around pretended like no one seen that...and fly till it was time to go...pretty scary if you ask me

I second what Shuttle Pilot said:
We have all done something similar or dumber... JUST take the time to look at the radio one last time before you fire that thing....

Good thing it was "only" a clutch liner and nothing more serious!

Neither are you, considering you can't use you're in the proper context.

it also shows what the hot start guys did RIGHT they HELD ON TIGHT !
to the head it would have been very bad news if they hadn't
and yes i have burned out a clutch completely in a very long 30 seconds but was so glad to have that head in a firm hold.

That is a good reason why I always start in throttle hold. Another tip is to start with the fuel line clamped, then any hot start is short lived. Once it fires, unclamp it. Tip from a guy at my field.

Been there done that, helinelly, but it was "only" A Raptor 30...and we saved the clutch.
Reason? Had accidentally wiped the Transmitter settings not long after I got the heli. Thought I'd got everything set up again. Neglected to check which way the throttle servo moved for WOT

I think it's some kind of initiation ceremony into the nitro heli brotherhood whcih we all should go through

Yep, done it once with my Titan. Switched on the Tx, got side tracked and never turned the heli on. I should have known when it sounded funny (open carb barrel) as I cranked it. Kept on cranking anyway. Longest 30 seconds of my flying career trying to shut it down.

You may want to pick up a new shoe too, because your is likely stretched out and will probably drag once you have a new liner.

Hot start won't always kill the liner. I hot started my 90SE a couple weeks back due to a bad throttle servo (actually started fine, then went wide open on the bench. Thankfully I had a solid grip on the head. Got the fuel line cutoff done very quick and got it shut down. Some clutch goo all over, but not that awful bad.
I dropped the engine when I had it home and the clutch liner is still workable.

If you completely killed the liner Swoop is right and you likely sprung the clutch as well. And since it gets real hot when you do that, it is likely to break off a shoe in the next few flights after you replace the liner. (Previous hot start experience).
