ok so i have a walkera dragonfly number 4 and i want to get some new batteries for it. only problem is the battery that came with it is different from stock, because its set up to run a video cam to. its a li-ion 7.4v 1600mAh battery. from what i can tell its completely different from what comes with the heli. the stock one doesnt have as any cells and doesnt have the wire that hooks up to the camera. i want new batteries that will give me lots of power with a long life, so could someone tell me what i should get? i have no idea what voltage or mAh has to do with anything, an explaination would be super helpful, thanks!

ok thanks for clearin that up, but is to much voltage or mah bad for my helicopter, and how to they affect the performance, and if you know much about the dragonfly 4 what kind should i get?

the higher the voltage, the faster the motor spins.

mAh is the rated capacity of the battery.
a higher capacity battery is typically bigger and heavier than a battery with a lower capacity.

ok thanks. so can to high a voltage or mah damage or overheat your motor?

Stick to the same voltage as the one that was in it, so 2 cells. The more mAh the longer flight time you will get and you can't damage it with too much

but im having trouble getting lift from my heli, so wouldn't a higher voltage help with that?( ive already tried a bunch of junk for getting more lift

3 cells may be too much for it, big jump from 7.4 to 11.6V

thats what i was thinking but ive found several websites that sell spare parts, and have found several different types of batterys, all for the "same" helicopter. such as this Ni-mH 8.4 volt 650mAh battery www.rc-fever.com/hm-004-z-25-ni-mh-battery-c-10-p-2-pr-58.html

could i use nimh batteries and li-ion batteries on the same chopper?
by the way the nimh batteries are the one on the box that my helicopter came in

The ni mh give more voltage so you may get alittle more headspeed but the capacity is half of the lipo you have so won't last as long plus the lipo is lighter. Swings and roundabouts

To add run time you might want to look for a 2S lipo with about 2000mah capacity. For your model, current drain is not going to be a problem so pick the battery with the lowest weight rather than going for one with a high 'C' rating. These smaller FP models are sensitive to weight and carrying a video camera is going to add to your weight so I'd not expect to see an improvement by trying an even heavier nickel battery.

You may also want to look for other motors. Your model is basically a Hummingbird clone - there are alternate motors that people have used in the Hummingbird that still work with the stock mixer board. Century used to have a "performance" motor as an option and there are some other motors like a Graupner speed 300 that might work for you.

ok thanks, just wondering is a li-po battery and a li-ion battery the same thing?

big jump from 7.4 to 11.6V

Or even from 7.4 to 11.1 .

Lithium-polymer (lipo) is an improvement on basic lithium-ion battery technology. Strictly speaking a lipo is also a li-ion battery, but in the US we tend to reserve the name li-ion strictly for batteries with a hard metal shell instead of the soft mylar around lipos. However I've seen a lot of advertising from the far east that says li-ion when the battery is actually what I would call a li-po. So there's lots of confusion on this point.

For a small fixed pitch heli, lipo is the best type of battery to use as it can easily supply the required current and it has the best power to weight ratio of the batteries we can get today.
