What is the verdict on Wire ties? I have seen posts where people say never use them, but have also seen a lot of pictures full of wire ties.

My installations don't use them for the most part because I was told early on that wire ties do more damage in a crash, and can also cause wearing on the wires and thus failure. I use some of the large spiral wrap and velcro strips, but I know it would be so much neater if I just used the ties.

Now, Align has actually put holes in the frames so we can easily use the wire ties.

What is the generally accepted practice?

Thanks,

Bill

I prefer velcro straps and wire loom this way I can take it all apart without damaging the wires.

Just wrap a small piece of velcro (soft side in) around the wire. Then the ziptie cannot wear through the wire insulation.

I use both personally...the wire ties attach to the spiral wrap only and not around the wires...the wire ties I use are 3/16th wide.

Another method that works for me is a small piece of fuel tubing slipped over the zip tie so it doesn't cut into the wires!

Anything that I wire tie to the frame has expandable braid sleeving over it, or fuel tubing around it. Tying wires together into bundles, I don't bother with the sleeving.

I use them,

Different insulation depending if its an Electric or Nitro...

If you crash so extremly badly (havent happened in my 30+ crashes) that you cut the wire, its fairly easy to re-solder a new one to any electronics you have.

That's exactly what I do also. Works great and cheap.

This stuff is also good -- 1/64 x 5/64 (.015 x .08) wax tie. Aircraft mechanics use it instead of zipties because it doesn't cut into insulation when stuff vibrates. VERY strong too. Cut some to length, tie it off, snip the extra -- real clean. Time to rebuild? Snip with scissors -- everything quickly comes loose.

I use zip ties also. Just like others have stated, I use them with spiral wrap or some other type of barrier.
I'll do one round of electrical tape on the spiral wrap, then wire tie on that. I have seen wires having an issue if the zip tie is against the wire itself. Vibration will eventually cause wear through the insulation of the wire that is against the zip tie.

If you pull on zip ties so your knuckles show white then obviously you are doing them up too tight and strangling the wires. If you do this then for certain they will cut into the wires.

If you pull up the zip ties so they just hold the wires there will be no damage.

hmmm

I always used the left over bread bad wire thingy's. Leave them nice and long to make it easier to remove and with that extra wire hanging out, it should add in RX reception!!!
Nah - I always use wire ties, just not too tight. The fuel tube method is used when I HAVE to really snug something down hard.

None of us likes to think about crashing, but in the event of a mishap, wires bound with zip ties will generally fail before the zip tie does, potentially increasing your equipment damage. Velcro pulls away if yanked hard enough, and it normally does so before the wire is damaged.

true, but.....

I've had it happen several times with planks. Snap roll, then....nada, as my brand new Ultimate flatspins in full throttle.
Reason?? Had it (battery pack) velcroed and rubberbanded to the mounting platform and it managed to escape both restraints - disconnecting from the reciever. After that...all zip ties on everything I can. I figure if you crash, you're gonna break stuff. I'd rather have it break in the crash, then have it be the CAUSE of the crash. Just my HO.

I shrink wrap all my wires that get bound with zip ties with HD black tubing. So far nothings worn.

I use little black zip ties on everything just not too tight. 20 years later never had a wire failure yet and I crash with the best of them.

If you don't go gorilla tightening them, wire ties are perfectly OK . . .

If I crash hard enough to yank the wires that way, the "potential" equipment damage is the least of my worries. In over 19 years of flying RC whenever I yank the wires that way is because the crash was so severe that i need to go back to the hobby shop to get one new of EVERYTHING, because nothing survived.

Plain wire ties here, the edges on the frames do more damage than the wire ties.

I use zip ties and never had a problem I just use with crashing in mind and position so they will not cut anything
