gidday, a clubmate has been sitting on a xcell 60 trainer kit for years and has partially built it. He wants to sell it, i havent seen it yet, but he tells me it has a wooden servo tray.

Do you have any info on this chopper, especially pics of the mechanics, ive googled it but have only found a pic with the canopy on.

how old is this chopper ,is it ccpm, wat size blades wood i run and wat wood be a rough price for it, and wat motor wood be best.....

I assume that it is old technology, i dont mind that, i seem to be developing an interest in the older stuff...........

Here is a good place to start,,
http://rchelibase.com/xcell/model/start/page6.html

It looks like the 1987 to 1993, 1001 Xcell heli is the only one with the old wooden servo tray, and if I'm not mistaken,, You can change it out to the newer plastic servo tray, but I'm not positive about that,, Good luck,, XGM/VGM

This is the home page for all the info on the Xcell line,,

The model your mate has is probably the earlier 1001 with the wooden servo tray. As John mentioned, the tray can be outfitted with the plastic tray. Plenty of sources where you might be able to get them.

Yep,, that's the earlier model of the 1001 Xcell heli,, they do fly ok if your just going to sport fly it, but if you are wanting to do some aerobatic's, then I would upgrade the servo tray, I think I have one still in the package, Let me know if you need it,, Good luck, sometime it nice to have the antique, and fly them as they were back in the day,, XGM/VGM

the biggest things you want to watch out for if you choose to fly this in its stock build is
1: it probly has a wire drive tail. if so you have to be carful not to run a HH gyro in HH mode you need to run it in normal mode with a low gain setting. The problem is wire drive will wind up and cause nasty tail wag in HH mode. The fix is upgrade to tube drive. If you do this also do fix # 2

2: with tube drive you need to upgrade front tail transmission to keep bevel gear from skipping over maingear teeth during hard tail stops

3: if it has non symetrical flybar yoke ( only goes around one side of head) and you want perfectly balanced head a small weight can be fastened to other side of head. ( not really a big deal but will cut down on vibs.
4: wood servo tray is ok if you add brace from a rear corner of tray to the frame with a couple of balls, links and some rod to build a link .just find a spot where the link doesnt interfer with anything.
5: does not probly have uniball clutch so you have to dial in the clutch shaft when you bolt it to fan and be carefull to not put it in a bind when you bolt the upper block into frames.
6: i would grind the anodising off of the edges of all radius's on frames as this reduce the chance of cracks in these areas from vibration.
7: when you build the head put both shims ( thin and thick) between the orings and blade holders.
The great thing about this machine is that you can get any part you need to keep it flying but it may require upgrading to newer style parts. somtimes this becomes expensive but it think it is still the best flying machines around. hope this helps Tom

thanks for the replies...... I picked it up today, far out, im used to ARF.... this one i have to think about. Its exactly the same as the one in the link in my earlier post.

Its got that curvy magna muffler,webra61 motor which i need bits for, some old set of fg blades still in the box, a set of wooden kit blades unopened and a JR nej 120 bb gyro new in the box. this gyro is 3 piece n huge. its a rate gyro and it has a gyro amplifier, gyro unit and a gain controller.....

Ill post some pics and can yous check here now and then, im sure i;ll have some questions at some stage........... Cheers

OH, .. im thinkin bout using this heli for a scale body longranger.... any advice on this also.............

Hi Dick
I still have my 1003 kit and am fairly sure that the only difference was the plastic tray.
Despite having a Fury Expert and Stratus, I still love flying the X-Cell.
Mine has been upgraded over the years a fair bit, but the heli is over 15 years old and still runs the original metal bend side frame to this day.
The original clutch will require some very careful and precise alignment.
Call Glenn from RCheliworld and ask him for the double carbon boom stays. He has got some so that you can make them up...a lot cheaper.
You will need the double stays for the HH gyros to work, as the boom with the single stay wasn't stiff enough in regards to sideways movement.
Get a GY401 with servo and setup the gyro for softer stops.
In this mode the wire drive works just fine.
Mine has gone through a lot of upgrades over the years but still runs the original bearing blocks, frames, bellcranks, radio tray, under carriage, swashplate, mixers etc.
It's still a sweet flying maschine fully capable of aerobatics and mild 3D.

Hey Alfred, this kit i have came from Max Tandy.I will contact Glen about the boom stays...I am also looking into sourcing a torque tube setup and front tail transmission upgrade.

Is there an easy way to identify a uniball clutch and an original clutch.i will have to invest in a dial indicator gauge? for the clutch.

I have been trying to find bits for the webra 61 that came with it but no luck, so im going to swap in a OS 70.Am really looking forward to getting it flying

x-cell 60 w/wooden tray

Good news the plastic tray is a bolt on upgrade, there is also an H shaped brace available from Min. Air. that connects the tank mount and plastic servo tray,I would definatly use it.
For the record I just did this upgrade last week and flew my 20 yr. old heli this past weekend.

When you fly JUNK it's hard to tell when you've crashed!

I am running an OS70 with a MP2 in mine right now, you will love it.
Mine is now CF boom and drive, plus uses the CF torque tube drive.
But I upgraded mine over the years.

Excellent
Now get the double boom stays for the boom.
It will increase the boom rigidy which means that your gyro will work a lot better.
You can also upgrade to the HH gyros. And yes, the wire drive is fine with HH,it's the boom that has to be stiff enough.

JR 8321's on all Cyclic and Collective. They are good as they are digital but use a lot less current then the Futaba's.
This bird will do aerobatics and mild 3D as in:
Loops, rolls, flips, inverted....
I run a CSM540 gyro with a JR 8900G servo.
