Antiques or Out of Business > No fear about old Helicopters...

Hello Oldie Fans,
a few weeks ago a post in our RC-Heli Community asked: “who have the oldest Heli?”…
Some posts later Mr. Dieter Schlüter (!) and a friend of mine, Ralf Kaiser (he have the Cobra No.3) have discovered the fog of time and answered the question finaly.
From this time on,an “new” old “Schlüter” hovering around in my Head…
( with two orange Floaters!)

I need a “new” 222 Trainer or a Heli-Boy… NOW!

In ebay I found three 222 Trainer…
Two deadly modified Helis with new engines and a lot of Robbe and Vario (!) Tuningparts for a lot of Euros
One original 222 Trainer with a little Rust, an old Varioprop RC, 60” Hörnlein engine and no Tuningparts.
-150 Euros later the 222 Trainer was mine…
One week later a big Box arrived…, like X-mas!

Let´s go!
Restore the Helicopter with original Parts
New RC
New Bearings 2RS (double sealed)
New Blades
New Canopy
But no mechanical Mixers
And a new Engine

That ´s the Plan…

It will continue…

i wish my english were so good as i can fly Helicopters...

Hello Oldie Fan´s,
it´s still going on…

Step one
The RC Box is restored
5 new Servos, Receiver, an old Graupner Gyro, Voltspy and a Sanyo 4,8Volts 2400mA/h Battery.
At the backside the switch, and ports for charging and the glowplug

All the parts are cleaned and checked …
Only the Hörnlein engine...
The crankshaft is broken, it´s only 6mm

Okay …, I need a new one!
Should I take this 75” Rossi…?

Step two

All the alloy parts back from anodizing
New ballbearings in the gears
And a lot of Vario Grease…

A funny constuktion kit…

Also the new Fuel bottle is in his place…
Perfect solution, lay the Heli on side and fill in the fuel…
Quick, easy and clean…

Now I am running to the postbox and waiting for some more spare parts…
In germany you can buy some parts in the shop of

nice anodizing. Should I ask what anodizing costs? Where did you get the anodizing done?

Man, I miss the eighties.

Roger,

That looks absolutely great!

Looking at the wooden cabin structure (which I had forgotten about), I remember that as being the only part of building the Heliboy that I did not like (only because I was, and still am, a lousy woodworker, so it took me longer to do it).

These were beautifully made machines with outstanding performance for their time. If memory serves, the rate of roll was faster than most current machines.

I will keep watching this thread for your progress!

Really cool!

Hello Oldie Fans,
it´s still going on…

Step 3

16 Ballbearings, 1.576.779 Screws, Nuts and Spacers later my “funny construction kit” will still grow up…
A package from Ebehard Hof has arrived with some spare parts in it…
Two wooden blades and a new canopy…
Also the new engine come fresh from china…

Yes…, I know…

My “new” Heli-Boy is a lucky one…,
He has going thru a time machine…

Here some basics about restore/rebuild an oldie

My oldies are restored in an original condition, all parts like mixers and engines will rebuild like the late 70´s.
But…, all my Helis must fly!
So some parts must spend their time in an box after overhauling.
A modern engine will handle the new syntetic fuel and and the temperature a lot better than our old HB, Hörnlein or Webra “Black Head” engine…
Also the old rc-system spend it´s time better in an showcase than in my Heli…

It is not necessary to have a big knot of wood, alloy and plastic parts lie still on the ground
in consequence of an old engine or rc-system…
For an exhibition or some pictures for magazines you can change the new stuff in 10 minutes back into the original condition…

So I come to a good compromise between old and new.
I hope…
Back to topic!

looks it pretty good?

Step 4

Can anyone still build some wooden blades?
First cut the blades like shown at the pics, in case of transport you can fold the blades by the Heli…
After grinding clean the surface with an moist cloth, then put on the self-adhesive foil bubble-free on the blades.
In the area of the bracket you must laminate some glass-fiber…

it will continue...

Hello Oldie Fans,
it´ s still going on…

Step 5
Build in the engine is not very difficult, fix the right air gap width is still brilliant…
A piece of paper and it works…
I have been decided to an 60” Magnum engine.
This engine have not so much power and it fits in my old lady perfectly.
for round about 90€ it looks like a good deal...
Newer and more powerfull engines like Rossi or OS will blown this pieces of wood, alloy and plastics in an orbit near ISS…

Step 6
Painting an old Heli is no problem…
I thought so…
I have tried some airbrush design “metal plates and nets”
Even so I am not so satisfied with the result…

The next Heli will come…

it will continue...

Roger,

I have a treat for you if you are interested...

A new in the box, Kavan gyro. I belive it to have never even been mounted. My 80yr old uncle passed away a few weeks ago and left me all his rc stuff. He had one heli that he built but never flew.

the fan housing fixed in the right place...

Now i must build in the new tailservo, take a final check and then the old lady will fly...

also here a picture of the updated sealed bearings...

it will continue...

@ westcoastchoper

I may be wrong, but aren't you missing the mixing levers that mounted on the blade pitch arms? The set-up as in your pics will not have bell-hiller mixing. Maybe my memory is faulty, but I thought there were mixing arms on the blades.

Tony F is correct.

The Bell/Hiller mixing levers are missing, as are the other two upper swashplate balls.

Edit:

I almost think I can remember that it was an option to build it without the mixers. You would end up with Hiller/Collective, as opposed to Bell/Hiller/Collective.

The Heliboy was know for being the firs truly aggressive aerobatic R/C helicopter. Removing the mixers would eliminate this.

I do have a vague recollection of flying one Heliboy, with the "S" head (fixed pitch, dual damping and full flapping). I liked that head on the Helibaby but did not care for it on the Heliboy.

Hello Oldie Fans,
yes the two pitch levers i am looking for...
Your memorys are not wrong...
In germany three versions of this heli where selled.

Heli Boy with an rpm controled "Schlaggelenk Kopf" like the Cobra
Bell 222 Trainer with an pitch controld "colektive Head"
and
Bell 222 Trainer with an colektive Head and the two pitch lever called "Acrobatic Head"

my old Lady wear an colektive Head and called Bell 222 Trainer.
If i find two pitch lever i will converse she in an acrobatik old lady...
the two swashplate balls are still in the parts box in my show case...

i wish my english were so good as i can fly Helicopters...

Tony and RAK are right. The head as is will only be setup for a Hiller only steering mechanism.

Roger:

You should find that the heli flies quite well without the Bell-Hiller upgrade to the head. That is the way I fly mine.

I still have the upgrade kit in its original unopened Bag #13...

Happy Flying!

Thanks tutelar-rc,
i will enjoy it...
Fly this heli without the upgrade is cool and smooth, the heli fly by it own.
With the upgrade the heli need a little bit more attention...
Today i had the first run-up.
The engine works perfect and the blades must trimed in the same level.
After 2 minutes i am hovering in my backyard, the system works very well...
With the electronic mixers of my MC-24 the heli fly by its own...
Only the mechanical noises are a little bit (very) scary

i wish my english were so good as i can fly Helicopters...

Check your gear mesh to the tail rotor (you have the main gear/pinion set correctly). I think the manual suggests a little play fore/aft.

Of course, you have everything, including tail blades perfectly balanced, and no run-out on your flywheel/clutch drive shaft...

Looking forward to the video/pictures!

Flight video will come soon...
In my hitec Model World i need sometimes a little bit old shool feeling...
Take a look at my Hompage...
