Hi guys, i was wondering if electrics have come along enough yet to be a serious contender, for a general runabout, road legal car. It seems pretty obvious to me , that fuel is not going to get any cheaper, so im looking to find out if electric is a viable alternative.
I drive about 600 ks a week for work, and it costs about 150AUS bucks, and im thinking that even all the lipos and a other cr@p it would take to convert a car, you would save that in a year, on fuel.
Ive seen a couple of gigantic hacker outrunners, that might be able to pull a little buzz box around, and hacker do some nice looking 200 amp speedies,,half a flight power factory, under the hood, where the motor would have been,, for balance, and ride/handling,, how hard can it be LOL

Couple of decisions to make,,,
What small car? Front wheel drive/rearwheel drive,,
Motor/ speedie combo
Choice of batteries, and wiring harness.
Motors in the wheel hub, or via common drive?

Heres what id really hope for.
About 200 ks range. Top speed of 130kph. Recharge in say about 6 hrs. Engines to be able to be used to generate power, from braking.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Salutes.

You could convert a car, but it wouldn't be easy. I'd love to have an all electric car, but I like my prius. For a decent ride, in a small car, I think you'd need around 80-100hp. that's around 750,000 watts. to stay at 200amps, you'd need to run 375 volts. I wouldn't use hobby motors. You can get industrial motors and speed controls that are somewhat affordable.

Rhett... There's no power like E Power!

They have motors with an output yoke, just swap your transmission. Brushless is not the best choice for car, AC induction or separately excited is better and they achieve relatively the same efficiency.
If you want 200km range be prepared to spend 8000-10000$ on batteries.

I'm looking to covert a motorcycle, they look to be the easiest to convert.

I also was looking to convert a motorcycle, but do to the cost and such, I ended up grabbing a Honda V65 magna cheap and will stick to the 45-50mpg and stick with gas wit loads of performance.
I have kicked the idea of converting a small car, like maybe a Fiat spider or Miata, something small and fun. from what I found you will want 375+ volts at least! for me the cost of the charger needed was the biggest turn off.

$4000 for a motor, $10,000 on batteries. Lets make it an even $15,000 to convert to E-power. Figure out what you pay for fuel and maintenance per year and divide that into 15K. That will be your break even point. I thought about doing this on my 4 runner. I spend about $4,000 per year on these services so just shy of four years, the costs will even out. So those conversion figures are not all that bad. If you do a search online, Nissan will have an E car in 2010 and BMW in 2012. They are not far off fellas.
